His ancestors are from Gujarat, India. He went to Longfield Primary School and then attended Whitmore High School, which is in the Rayners Lane area of Harrow.
Patel's first acting experience was in his school's play of Twelfth Night and played the role of Sir Andrew Aguecheek. Dev Patel achieved good scores in GCSE Drama at Whitmore High School for his remarkable depiction of a minor in the Beslan school attack. His drama teacher Niamh Wright was once quoted as saying that Dev was a promising child whose intuitive power to communicate a range of characters creatively had struck him.
