It was he who first played the role of a private detective in the movie 'Murder, My Sweet.' This movie gained huge success among audiences. He was also known for his programs and received good responses for serving as a host of the very significant radio program 'Hollywood Hotel', which was aired from the West Coast. He also starred in the movie 'A Midsummer Night's Dream' that was inspired by William Shakespeare's play, and he played the role of Lysander. 
Dick Powell commenced his career as a singer, and before getting into acting, he was singing with the famous musical group the Charlie Davis Orchestra and recorded numerous songs for them. His birth name was Richard Ewing Powell. Although he started his career as a musical comedy performer, he transformed himself into a leading cast actor in several movies of dramatic nature thanks to his versatility.

In 1934, Dick Powell portrayed the character of a protagonist named Bob Lane in the comedy movie 'Happiness Ahead'. He also acted in 'Twenty Million Sweetheart', a musical comedy movie, as Buddy Clayton. One year later, in 1935, he again played the role of a protagonist named Dick Curtis in the musical film 'Gold Diggers Of 1935'. Next, he starred as Lysander in 'A Midsummer Night's Dream', which was a movie inspired by William Shakespeare's play.
During the 1940s, Dick Powell wanted to make a switch from the genre of romantic heroes in his movies to try out some tough characters, like private detectives. In 1944, he broke the stereotype and played the character of a private detective for the first time in an American movie noir called 'Murder, My Sweet' as Philip Marlowe. He is said to be the first person who portrayed the character of Philip Marlowe on the big screen.
