Lake Superior is the largest lake in North America.
When it comes to the largest lakes of North America, there are around 64 lakes. The largest lakes would be Lake Superior, Lake Huron, Lake Michigan, Lake Ontario, Lake Erie, and many more.
Lake Superior is not only the largest lake in North America, it is also the coldest. The cool climate and depth of around 500 ft (152.4 m) make Lake Superior the coldest of the largest lakes. But in terms of depth, Lake Baikal in Russia is the deepest lake in the world. Apart from being the deepest, Lake Baikal is also the world's largest freshwater lake. Although, Crater Lake with a depth of 1947 ft (593.44 m) is the deepest lake in North America. Most of the great lakes in North America lack fresh water. Lake Tahoe of North America is the cleanest lake in the US.
Lake Huron and Lake Michigan are located in different places of North America but are connected by the Mackinac Strait. Two of the great lakes of North America combined have the potential to be the largest lake.
Lake Huron originates in the east-central part of Michigan and Ontario. Near the Sarnia port, Lake Huron meets the Strait of Mackinac and gets connected to the Michigan lake after which they flow as one. Whereas Michigan originates from the western part of North America flowing across Illinois, Indiana, and Michigan. Along with the Mackinac strait, Michigan lake gets connected to Lake Huron. Both the lakes combined become one of the largest lakes in the world. According to researches, the African great lakes are massive as well but nothing compared to these lakes of North America. Lake Michigan- Huron beats Lake Nyasa and Lake Tanganyika of the African continent in terms of size. The latter, Lake Tanganyika is known to have Nile crocodiles residing in them.
The most important specialty of Lake Michigan-Huron Of North America is the fact that these two lakes are originally two different lakes but are can be considered single.
Technically both the great lakes share the same surface. Two of the largest lakes of North America are connected by the Strait of Mackinac. This strait is not a river due to the discontinuous flow of water through it. One of the main reasons behind considering them to be different water bodies is their flow of water. The water from both lakes is reversed at times. Since both are immensely large bodies that meet together through a strait, a balance in the water is not maintained. In case if Lake Michigan-Huron is considered a single water body, it will be larger than Lake Superior both by that total surface area and by water volume.
When we talk about the biggest lakes in the world, the great lakes of North America are always on the list. North America is known to have around 64 lakes situated across the region. These lakes might not be the mightiest but are known to have amazing visiting spots. Most of the great lakes of North America are freshwater lakes with massive water volumes. The water reaches the regions like Nevada, California, and Arizona. The water from the lake generates power of 2080 megawatts approximately.
