About Dikembe Mutombo

Dikembe Mutombo is a Congolese-American and a former professional basketball player who played over 18 seasons in the NBA.
Born in Congo, Dikembe wanted to become a doctor and attended Georgetown University in the United States on an academic scholarship. Things changed when he caught the attention of 'Georgetown Hoyas' coach John Thompson, because of his height.
Dikembe had been playing football and practicing martial arts before moving to the U.S., so the transition to basketball was not difficult, however, he was still raw to the game. This did not deter him to become a star player on his University's team. During his first year in college, Mutombo blocked 12 shots in a game. He was named a Big East Defensive Player of the Year in 1990 and 1991.
Mutombo was eventually drafted by the Denver Nuggets in 1991. His ability to shot-block made an immediate impression and led to the Denver Nuggets going up in rankings. His signature technique became so famous that Adidas generated a new catchphrase saying "Man does not fly... in the house of Mutombo". Mutombo was also selected for the All-Star Game as a rookie. In a few years, Dikembe established himself as a star defensive player and the Denver Nuggets kept on improving with him. He led the team to eventually win the series. By the end of the 1995-96 season, Mutambo became a free agent and sought a 10-year contract with the Denver Nuggets, which did not happen.
Dikembe later left the Denver Nuggets and signed a five-year contract with the Atlanta Hawks as a free agent. He continued as an NBA defensive player and won them two seasons. With him, the Atlanta Hawks defeated the Detroit Pistons. He put up excellent defensive numbers with the Atlanta Hawks and the team kept on climbing up. From the 1999 to 2000 season, which was going to be his last with the Atlanta Hawks, Mutombo made a career and league-high rebounds per game leading to the team winning the season.
After leaving the Atlanta Hawks, Dikembe then went on to join the New Jersey Nets in 2002. He, however, was able to play only 24 games throughout the season because of an injury. The New Jersey Nets eventually bought out his contract after one contentious season. Mutombo joined the Philadephia 76ers and led them to reach the NBA finals where they lost to LA Lakers. He then went on to join New York Knicks. His time with the team was not that good so he later joined the Houston Rockets. He helped the team win multiple games and set a team record. Mutombo's last year was 2019 and his basketball career. Contemplating retirement, he played his farewell tour in the final season. He, however, was injured and required surgery. Dikembe eventually declared his retirement after 18 seasons.
