Domee Shi, an only child, was born in 1989 in Chongqing, Sichuan. She was an only child to her parents. She and her parents immigrated to Canada when she was two years old. Shi lived in Newfoundland for six months before relocating to Toronto. This is where she was raised and educated in the arts by her father. She was inspired by her father's art. He was a Chinese landscape painter and college professor of fine arts.

When instructing Bao, Shi drew motivation and direction from the disposition of her mother. Shi was introduced to Asian cinema and animation throughout her formative years via the studio Ghibli and Disney. Domee Shi became the Vice President of her school's anime club. This was when she was a high school student. She loved to watch anime and read the manga.

Shi participated in online art communities and posted her fan art on DeviantArt. This was her first introduction to a community of like-minded individuals. It aided in the formation of a network for her with other artists. Shi was, therefore, motivated to pursue her post-secondary studies by enrolling at Sheridan College.

Shi completed her studies in animation at Sheridan in 2011. She participated in a Nancy Beiman course during her second year at Sheridan, and she attributes her interest in storyboarding to that class. Shi produced a little movie for a task during her last year at Sheridan. Domee Shi worked as a storyboard artist, animator, clean-up artist, and animator. Domee Shi temporarily worked as a cartooning teacher after graduation. She focused on character design and comic book development. She consented to a three-month storyboard artist fellowship with Pixar in 2011. After being rejected by the animation company and other companies like Disney and DreamWorks, this was her second effort. In 2014, Shi created an animated webcomic series called 'My Food Fantasies'. In that, she depicted 'outlandish' food-related scenarios.

Shi subsequently said that while working on My Food Fantasies, she became interested in creating tales about food. She worked as a storyboard artist on 'Inside Out'. This was the first feature picture she produced with Pixar. Shi started working on 'Toy Story 4' in 2015 after shortly completing The Good Dinosaur. For the 2018 movie 'Incredibles 2', she also created storyboards for a scene starring the characters Jack-Jack and Edna Mode.

As a 'side-project' during her full-time work on 'Inside Out', the short film 'Bao' was created. Ultimately, she proposed Bao and two other concepts to Pixar and her mentor, Pete Docter, for funding.

'Bao' was authorized in 2015. Domee Shi became the studio's first female director of a short film. The eight-minute short had its world premiere at the 2018 Tribeca Film Festival. This is where it played in cinemas before Incredibles 2. Bao won the Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film. Shi became the first person of color to win the award.

Domee Shi was reportedly in charge of directing a movie at Pixar in May 2018. Shi acknowledged that she was engaged in film production at the studio in November 2018.

In addition, Shi stated that the story of the movie was still being developed. She said that she intended for the movie to be entertaining and emotional.

Shi's debut feature film was revealed in December 2020. The working title was 'Turning Red'. In March 2022, it was supposed to be released in theaters. However, due to the epidemic, Disney+ instead released it direct-to-stream on that day. Early in April 2022, Pixar promoted Shi to the vice president of creative. Disney claimed that Turning Red was the most-streamed movie on Disney+.
