On May 2, 1955, Donatella Versace was born in Reggio Calabria, Italy, and spent her early life there only. She was the youngest one among the four children of Antonio Versace and Francesca Versace. Her father, Antonio Versace, was a salesman and her mother, Francesca Versace, was a dressmaker. Donatella has three siblings two elder brothers, Gianni Versace and Santo Versace, and one elder sister, Tina Versace. Unfortunately, her sister Tina died at the age of 12 due to improper treatment for a tetanus infection. On being convinced by her brother Gianni, she dyed her hair blonde at the age of 11.
In 1973, Donatella joined the University of Florence to major in foreign languages. As she planned to become a teacher. While in university, she regularly went to Milan to help her brother Gianni Versace with his clothing business.

In 1978, when the company Versace was founded, Donatella was made the vice president of the company. She was involved in coordinating advertising campaigns and fashion shows for the company. In 1989, her brother, Gianni, dedicated a newly launched perfume line named 'Blonde' to her, and he also gave Donatella her own label named 'Versus.' She got more involved in the business mid-'90s. After the murder of her brother Gianni in 1997, Donatella became Versace's chief designer. However, she was very disturbed by his untimely death.
Donatella also designed the advertising campaigns for the company, which includes many famous artists such as Lady Gaga, Demi Moore, Beyoncé, Madonna, Nicki Minaj, Courtney Love, January Jones, Christina Aguilera, and Jonathan Rhys Meyers. She also designed the Green Versace dress named Jungle-Dress, which was worn by Jennifer Lopez in 2000 at the 42nd Grammy Awards. It became the point of attention in the whole world. From 2002- 2003, Gianni and Donatella's well-known designs were showcased in the London's Victoria and Albert Museum through a special exhibit which they named ‘Versace at the V&A.’
Besides being portrayed in 'Saturday Night Live,' she has been depicted by Gina Gershon in the 'House of Versace' and by Penelope Cruz in the 'American Crime Story: The Assassination of Gianni Versace.' She archived her career as well as the company's legacy in the book named 'Versace,' which was released in 2016. In September 2017, Donatella Versace set up a fashion show, which she dedicated to her brother as a tribute to him. Donatella designed the Palazzo Versace Australia resort, which was opened in September 2000. She was also heavily involved in the design of the Palazzo Versace Dubai, the brand's second hotel, which opened in November 2016.
In 2018, Donatella decided to sell the company. The same year she sold it to the American designer Michael Kors, noted for his company Capri Holdings, for $ 2.2 billion. However, she continued to be the Chief Creative Officer of the company.
