Eckhart Tolle was born in the German town of Lunen. He moved in with his mother when his parents divorced. He lived in the country during the post-war period when he was young and could not stand any destruction. The war induced a sense of insecurity and fear in him in his early days.
He was 13 when he moved to Spain and studied literature, astronomy, and languages at home. Books by the German poet, Joseph Anton, influenced him heavily and he started reading books by the author that were gifted to him.
He started living with his father in Spain in 1961. He did not enroll in a school and started studying at home. Even though he lacked formal school education, when he was 19, Eckhart moved to London to teach German and Spanish. This was his first step toward overcoming his anxiety, depression, and fear.
He joined the University of London to study philosophy, psychology, and literature. After graduation, he was offered a scholarship by Cambridge University to do postgraduate research. He joined the university in 1977 but soon dropped out.

Eckhart followed Meister Eckhart, the German philosopher and this is why he changed his name from Ulrich Leonard to Eckhart. He often stayed at Buddhist monasteries and led a simple life. His friends went to him for guidance, and this made him a spiritual guide and a very good counselor. In 1995, he moved to Vancouver, Canada, and began writing his first novel. Two years later, in 1997, the book 'The Power Of Now' was published. He only printed 3000 copies of the book, but after seeing the demand the following year, he printed more. Oprah Winfrey recommended this book in 2000 in her magazine, and this made the book very popular all over the world. The New York Times featured this book in their bestseller list. The book has since been translated into 33 languages.
His book was republished by New World Library in 1999 after huge demand for the first publication by Namaste Publishing.
His second book 'Stillness Speaks' was published in 2003, and his third book 'A New Earth: Awakening to Your Life's Purpose' was released two years later in 2005. This book was selected for 'The Oprah Winfrey Show' (her talk show) in the segment called 'Oprah's Book Club by Winfrey'. In Eckhart's initial writing days, she showed him a lot of support. In 2008, they teamed up for webinars on 'A New Earth'.
Tolle also founded the Eckhart Teachings company. Eckhart Teachings is the name of the company that sells his teaching materials. Eckhart Tolle TV is another website where he posts spiritual films and meditations. He also has a YouTube account where he broadcasts meditation-related videos.
