Her older brother Bob, who is also an actor, is her inspiration. Irene Mcclurg, her mother, worked as a secretary for the Federal Aviation Administration. In her early life during the '60s, Mcclurg studied a course on Radio at the Missouri–Kansas City University and later taught there for eight years. From Syracuse University she did a master's degree. Edie Mcclurg has also worked as a teacher and a radio personality. She was also a newswoman, DJ, and producer for the National Public Radio (NPR) under KCUR-FM at the University of Missouri–Kansas City.
