Evgeni Viktorovich Plushenko was born on November 3, 1982 in Dzhamku, Khabarovsk Krai, Soviet Union. Evgeni Plushenko's parents are Tatiana Vasilievna Plushenko and Victor Plushenko. His father was a carpenter. Plushenko has only one sibling, his elder sister. He graduated from school No. 91 in Petrogradsky District in 1998 and started studying at Lesgaft University in 2000. Evgeni Plushenko also graduated from the Faculty of Tourism and Hospitality at Saint Petersburg State University of Engineering and Economics in 2004.

When he was a kid, Plushenko occasionally suffered from colds, prompting his mother to enroll him in figure skating lessons at age four as a form of exercise. He trained in Volgograd, Russia, under Tatiana Skala until his ice rink closed when he was 11. He then moved with his mother to Saint Petersburg in 1994, where he trained under the guidance of Alexei Mishin.

After appearing on the international scene for figure skating, Evgeni Plushenko became the youngest player to become a world medalist and world junior champion. He won the Junior championship in 1997 at 14, and at the 1998 world championships, he won the bronze medal at the age of 15.

Evgeni had an excellent spell in the 2000/2001 season. He won all events he participated in and also earned his first world title. Following the 2002-2006 season, Evgeni won the silver medal only twice. The first was at the 2003/2004 Grand Prix Final, and the second was at the 2004 European championships. At the 2006 Winter Olympics held in Turin, Italy, he became the Olympic champion by skating two solid programs.

Following his two years absence from skating after the victory in Turin, Evgeni Plushenko returned to skating and participated in the 2009 Cup of Russia. He won the gold medal with a total of 240.65 to mark his comeback. He skated at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, Canada, and broke the Olympic record by receiving a score of 90.85 for his short program performance.

After aiding Russia to the gold medal with a beautiful virtuoso display in the first ever Olympic team event at Sochi 2014, Evgeni Plushenko earned his fourth Olympic medal, which made him equal the 80-year-old record for a male skater of four Olympic medals set by Sweden's Gillis Grafström.

Evgeni decided not to proceed with the men's singles competition after enduring a back injury during practice. It was announced later that he would be drawing the curtain on competitive skating but did not exclude the possibility of coming back for the 2018 South Korea Winter Olympics. However, Evgeni announced on March 2, 2014, that he would undergo another back surgery, saying he felt a snapped pin in his back. This halted any plans for a return to professional competition.

After halting his skating career, Evgeni Plushenko later hinted at his interest in coaching. He opened his skating school after officially retiring from professional competition in March 2017. He coached the 2014 Olympic champion, Adelina Sotnikova, from April 2017 until 2020, when she retired. He is also the coach of Ekaterina Ryabova and Stanislava Konstantinova.
