'The Vampire Diaries' has managed to fascinate the audience in a world where vampire stories are saturated.

It is an amazing series in pop culture, so why shouldn't people love it? The show mainly features Ian Somerhalder as Damon Salvatore, Nina Dobrev as Elena Gilbert, and Paul Wesley as Stefan Salvatore.

The show is based on Mystic Falls city, where supernatural activities commonly tend to take place. Though it is a fictional series about vampires and not based on a true story, the creators did such a great job on it that people think it to be quite true to life and relatable. But did you also know that the show's co-creators didn't really want the show to be too supernatural? Surprising, but true.

'The Vampire Diaries' is based on two vampire brothers who fall in love with a teenage girl who looks exactly like a vampire from their past whom they loved dearly. This is the same vampire that had previously turned the two into vampires. The story is intriguing, and when you begin watching it, you realize that the show gets more progressive and addictive. Every show has secrets or facts that you may not be aware of, and we're here to shed more light on the unique facts of this hit TV show.

For those who like adventure and supernatural stories, 'The Vampire Diaries' is a great choice! For people who haven't watched the show, please be mindful that there may be spoilers ahead.

Vampire Diaries Review

If you are a 'Twilight' fan, then 'Vampire Diaries' can be the best series you can consider watching. At first, you may find it to be an imitation of the overhyped 'Twilight' series, but as the seasons progress, you will soon realize how well the story builds and how relatable it gets.

'Vampire Diaries' is a fictional series created by Kevin Williamson. Most people often wonder, is 'Vampire Diaries' based on a true story? This popular show is based on the famous book series written by L J Smith and not a real-life story.

Members of the cast are found to be very attractive, with the Salvatore brothers Damon and Stefan being the main attraction, as they're massive fan following shows (Ian Somerhalder, who plays Damon has 22.3 million followers and Paul Wesley, who plays Stefan has 12.1 million followers on Instagram). Nina Dobrev was equally good as she played the double roles of Elena Gilbert and Katherine Pierce (and she has a whopping 25.3 million followers on Instagram).

Ian Somerhalder or Damon Salvatore may initially feel like a villain, but you will become a big fan of his personality by the end. He is a smart, suave, and scary vampire. But did you know that Ian Somerhalder was married to a vampire (kind of)? He was married to Nikki Reed, who played the role of vampire Rosalie Hale in the 'Twilight' film series!

The series is based on supernatural creatures, so this can be the best consideration if you love watching supernatural drama. If you're wondering what they drink in 'Vampire Diaries'? It is indeed blood! Yes, they feed on blood!

Because of the portrayal of blood and other things, it was advised that people above 15 should watch the series. At first, the creators were also sure that the show would be a failure, but it was quite the opposite, making its stars and the creators incredibly wealthy!

Nina Dobrev had to face a lot of criticism because, in the book, the description of Elena is different, that she had blue eyes and blonde hair, whereas Nina didn't have either. In fact, at first, they did consider Ashlee Simpson for the role, but later, when Nina Dobrev sent in the tape of her audition, they were really impressed.

Cast Of The Vampire Diaries

'The Vampire Diaries' has eight seasons and around 171 episodes in total. The main character here was Nina Dobrev (playing the double roles of Elena Gilbert and Katherine Pierce), Ian Somerhalder (Damon Salvatore) as well as Paul Wesley (Stefan Salvatore). There are countless other important characters in the show, and some of them include Steven McQueen (Jeremy, Elena's brother), Candice King (Caroline Forbes), Zach Roerig (Matt Donovan), Kayla Ewell (Vicki Donovan), Michael Trevino (Tyler Lockwood), Matt Davis (Alaric Saltzman), and Michel Malarkey (Enzo).

We can't, of course, forget about 'The Originals' (who went on to star in the spin-off show of the series with the same name), Joseph Morgan (Niklaus Klaus Mikaelson), Daniel Gillies (Elijah Mikaelson), and Claire Holt (Rebekah Mikaelson). They were incredible and added a whole new level of mystery to the show 'The Originals'.

Most fans of the show still await season nine, but unfortunately, the show hasn't been renewed.

It was said that the role of Katherine was initially not very substantial, but later on, changes were made, and her role was made quite significant.

As the series went on, the cast started to understand each other and formed great relationships. Though Paul and Nina were claimed to have issues at the onset of filming the series, they came together and had a ton of fun later on. Also, the beautiful witch in the show, whose name is Kat Graham (played by Bonnie Bonnet) is something else.

Like Stefan and Damon, everyone has a different character, the Salvatore brothers were Vampires. Most people may not have an idea, but the brother almost went on to have a different surname on the show — Whitmore.

Tyler Lockwood, a werewolf, only had a small supporting role in the show, but later, it was considered to be a big role as everyone liked him. Bonnie was a witch, and Elena was a human, but later in the show, she turned into a vampire.

In the first season, Damon became a vampire, Candice king AKA Caroline. Zach Roerig does not have a big role, but he played an amazing role in every season, and even at first, nobody thought he would last long in the show, but he did.

You may be wondering who is the highest-paid actor in 'The Vampire Diaries' out of all the cast members. The main cast that included Nina Dobrev, Ian Somerhalder, and Paul Wesley was paid equally as they were all considered equal and played crucial roles in the show that everyone loves.

Steven McQueen had a small role in the beginning, and in between the show, he disappeared, but he evolved into something amazing in the end. A fun fact is Steven McQueen was playing Elena's younger brother, whereas he was six months older than Nina Dobrev. In real life, Nina Dobrev could be his younger sister.

At the beginning of the show, the directors, including Kevin Williamson, thought that the show would be bumped and they may get to see articles of bad reviews, but things went well, and it was the longest-running vampire show in history.

Different cast members had apparently auditioned for different shows, and there was an entirely different set of people who auditioned for 'The Vampire Diaries'. For example, Ian Somerhalder had auditioned for another show, 'True Blood', for the role of Jason Stackhouse. Somerhalder had even auditioned for the role of Christian Grey of 'Fifty Shades Of Grey', but he did not get the role. Likewise, the role of Damon Salvatore was auditioned for by many others, including Paul Wesley, Zach Roerig, and Michael Trevino.

Apart from their love triangle relationship on the show, Ian Somerhalder and Nina Dobrev were in a relationship for three years, from 2011 to 2013, and it made headlines as one of the most talked-about romances during the time.

Kat Graham (who plays Bonnie Bennett) is not just an actor but also a singer and is thus considered a witch of supreme talent.

You'd be shocked to know that Paul Wesley was in a love triangle even off the sets. It starts when he got married to the actress Torrey Devitto and after the split in 2013, he started dating Hayley Marshall, and they broke up in 2017.

Kevin Williamson and Julie Plec earlier wanted Michelle Geller on the show for the role of Rose-Marie (played by Lauren Cohan), but she did not accept it.

The role of Lexi was inspired by Taylor Swift. Kevin was a big fan of Taylor Swift and wanted to cast her too!

Did you know that Ian Somerhalder and Paul Wesley directed three episodes in the show that proved incredibly successful? There is also a Dawson's Creek connection as he was asked to be on the show, but he left because he wanted to do a horror movie.

A total of 171 episodes have been aired since the VD series premiered on September 10, 2009, and it ended on March 10, 2017.

Different Seasons Of The Vampire Diaries

Every season has a different story in the show in the first season, where Elena (whose role was supposed to be played by Ashlee Simpson) loses her parents and her little brother Jeremy turns into a drug addict, and just then a stranger sweeps into the town and causes suspicion in her friend's mind. At the end of that season, he is revealed as a vampire and reunites with his brother after 15 years.

In the second season, all the focus is on the return of doppelganger Katherine. This was the season where all new and mysterious aspects were being introduced, including werewolves, the sun, the moon curse, and even the first 'original'. This season, Caroline (played by Candice King), became a vampire when Katherine killed her, and Damon (Ian Somerhalder) saved her by feeding her with vampire blood. It was the time when Damon met Katherine. This is exactly when Klaus arrives and plans to unleash his werewolf side.

Season three was all about 'The Originals' and their stories. Stefan sinks deeper into the darker side, whereas Damon and Elena are constantly in guilt for their growing feelings. This is exactly the time when they work together to bring Stefan back home.

Through season four, Caroline and Elena were suspicious about Professor Shane. He reveals the world of witchcraft to Damon and Bonnie. With the help of Stefan and Klaus, Jeremy had explored a new chapter of his life as a vampire slayer. Elena confesses to Stefan, whereas Matt Donovan gives useful information to Damon about Shane. This is a season filled with twists.

Season five brought hope for Elena (Nina Dobrev) as after spending summer with Damon (Ian Somerhalder), she went to Whitmore College with Caroline. Unfortunately, they were not aware that Bonnie had given up her life to resurrect Jeremy. The ending for Damon and Elena was over a big fight regarding how much each one is dependent on the other.

In season six, it was the time when Elena was in college and scared of Damon's death. Caroline had dropped out, and Jeremy was still coping with the death of Bonnie. It was time when they got access to the other world where they met Kai, a new character. Alaric was still adjusting to his vampire side. It is fun to note that James Van Der Beek was asked to play the role of Alaric, but as James Van Der Beek was busy, he didn't.

In season seven, Lily was finally put to rest. Stefan and Damon were then searching for Julian's leads. At that time, Bonnie loses her power as she becomes the vampire slayer, devastated because of losing Damon and Enzo. Matt decides to leave the town of the supernatural for good. In contrast, Damon and Enzo were somewhere in suspended animation.

Season eight or the series finale was incredible, and the most awaited of them all. Stefan (Paul Wesley) gets arrested as he transitions back to human, but Caroline manages to compel the police. Stefan (Paul Wesley) visited Nina in a life and death situation and joined Lexi in the afterlife. Bonnie breaks Elena's sleeping curse, and she comes back to life, thus reuniting with Damon.

Last Episode Of The Vampire Diaries

The series finale or the last season was the homage to the show's first episode. Every episode from last season has a name from season one, such as memories. There are many things that you do not know about the series. For example, Damon wanted to stay bad, but it was not likely for the story as he was against the change. Also, switching to vamp mode in the show was not easy, it took tons of hours of makeup and many efforts to get the look right every single time.

The last episode was hard for everyone on the show, but it hit Paul Wesley hardest as he cried at the finale. After playing his role for about eight seasons, the actor admitted that he finally cried while reading the final script of the last episode. For the audience, it was even harder to digest.

Did You Know...

In episode 23 of season four, the letter Caroline (played by Candice King) got from Klaus (played by Joseph Morgan) itself was enough to spawn a whole new series. The directors said that they could broaden it up and write whole new episodes based on the lines in that letter.

You may see people drinking a lot in the story without ever having a hangover, which makes people wonder; what in fact did they drink on 'Vampire Diaries'? All the people of Mystic Falls love bourbon. And can a vampire get drunk? Well, they can't!

Season six of the show was based on the 1990's songs or themes. It was when Elena and Damon went to the 1990s to save Bonnie. That is why the show decided to keep the name of every episode based on 1990's songs.
