UFC matchmaker Joe Silva saw the potential and talent in Frank Mir when he met him for the first time at a Brazilian jiu-jitsu (BJJ) school.  Following Joe Silva's advice, Frank Mir started competing in mixed martial arts and made his debut on July 14, 2004, against Jerome Smith at HOOKnSHOOT: Showdown.
Frank Mir proved Joe Silva correct in his prediction when he won his debut fight against Jerome Smith and sustained very little to minor injuries. This goes on to show how talented Frank Mir was. After nailing a definite win in his first-ever professional fight, Frank Mir went on to win his next UFC match, which was against Dan Quinn. Frank Mir spent his teenage years training and honing his skills there while being raised by his father to take up wrestling professionally with the notion that it would help Frank avoid submissions in the future.
The pressure from Frank Mir's father was getting real, and soon Mir found himself joining the wrestling team at Bonanza High School during his junior year. However, he bit the dust every single time during his first nine matches as part of the wrestling team, and it remained that way till he decided that he was not prepared enough to take on fights head-on yet.
Frank Mir decided to train himself more, and it was these initial losses that ignited the spark of doing better in him. Of making a name for himself in the world. After a year of hardcore practice and a year later, in 1998, during his senior year at High School, he won the State Championship with a score of 44-1.
Frank Mir's game of fullback and defense on their high school's football team brought the team to the Southern Zone semifinals in 1997. Apart from wrestling, mixed martial arts, and football, Frank Mir also had quite a big name in track and field and discus throw. Frank Mir came face to face with a dangerous accident on September 17, 2004, when a car crashed onto his motorcycle. After the doctors ran the tests, they discovered that there were two breaks in Mir's femur and torn ligaments in his knee. Although the accident ended up in Frank Mir being stripped of his Undisputed UFC Heavyweight Champion title, he was glad to have spent some valuable time with his wife.
Soon, Frank Mir returned to the UFC and fought with Márcio Cruz, a fourth-degree BJJ black belt and six-time Mundials Champion.
