Frederick Martin MacMurray was born on August 30, 1908 in Kankakee, Illinois. His family moved to Madison, Wisconsin when MacMurray was a baby, where his father taught piano.
On a full scholarship, MacMurray attended Quincy High School in Quincy, Illinois before attending Carroll College in Waukesha, Wisconsin.
He was a saxophonist in several local bands. Fred Macmurray did not complete his college education.

Fred MacMurray began his career as a clarinetist and tenor saxophonist with the Gus Arnheim Orchestra (1930–31). Despite being stereotyped as a 'good guy,' MacMurray stated that his best roles came when he was cast against the type, such as in Billy Wilder and Edward Dmytryk's films.
Walter Neff, an insurance salesman who schemes with a greedy widow to murder her husband in the film noir classic 'Double Indemnity,' is perhaps his best known 'bad guy' performance.
He co-starred alongside George Montgomery and John Smith in the first episode of NBC's 'Cimarron City' Western series in 1958.
