She also graduated from Howard University School of Communications with a bachelor's degree in journalism in 1987. She also spent time as a child in Somalia and as a college exchange student in France.
Fredricka Whitfield is the child of Mal Whitfield, an Olympian and American middle-distance runner.  She graduated from Paint Branch High School in 1983.
