Due to his interest in music, Funk Flex performed in a number of Vito Bruno's nightclubs in the early '90s. Later, Bruno persuaded Joel Salkowitz, the regional vice president of Hot 97, to start airing live broadcasts from clubs where he performed. They boosted the hours of this urban radio programming as they knew the resurrection of Hip Hop was approaching quickly after its collapse in the '80s. Aston George Taylor Jr. began mixing and presenting his own show, a dedicated rap programme on Hot 97, in the spring of 1992, due to the popularity of such programming.
Hot 97 came to be known as the first pop station in New York to broadcast rap music. Since then, Funkmaster Flex has stayed with Hot 97, and his show airs on syndication across the country on weeknights and weekends. His trademark 'bomb drop' sound effect on albums has made him famous.
Funkmaster Flex confirmed plans for a new album in October 2020. In December, he collaborated with King Von on the album's debut track, 'Lurkin', and announced that the album would include Juice Wrld, Post Malone, Kodak Black, Lil Baby, and Pop Smoke, among others. Although no release date has been set, the record will be distributed by Flex's own label, IFWT Films and Records.
Funkmaster Flex established his news website InFlexWeTrust.com on August 3, 2010. He makes exclusive, audio, video, and mp3s of artist freestyles from his event available on the web. In addition to entertainment news, this site features music, automobiles, models, sports, and technology. It became a member of the Complex Media Network in September 2012 and has been referenced in songs like the song 'So NY' by the American rapper and singer Fabolous.
DJ Funkmaster Flex was arrested in 2011 for reportedly pushing his ex-wife Monica Joseph-Taylor and sending her threats via text. He later battled in court with his ex-girlfriend for child support for their son in 2014.
Funkmaster Flex had a feud in 2012 with Power 105.1, a rival NYC hip-hop radio station, and its radio personalities, including DJ Envy and Charlamagne Tha God. In 2015, a petition was established asking Funkmaster Flex to leave his radio show on NYC's Hot 97. Through a series of social media tweets, he vowed that he would play an exclusive premiere of Meek Mill's response diss track to rapper Drake's 'Charged Up' in the midst of their fight.
Funkmaster Flex said he had reference tracks that will reveal Drake's use of a ghostwriter during the real broadcast on Monday, July 27, 2022. Listeners became outraged after hearing Fetty Wap's 'Trap Queen', and songs from Future's DS2 on repeat, claiming that they had been deceived.
Funkmaster Flex was signed by a big record company, Loud Records, in the mid-'90s for a series of mixtapes called '60 Minutes Of Funk'. The RIAA in the United States awarded all four gold certifications. Biz Markie, Big Kap, DJ Enuff, BounceMasta Doo-Wop, Mister Cee, Frankie Cutlass, Cipha Sounds, DJ Riz, and Mark Ronson established The Flip Squad in 1995 with seven of New York City's most regarded disc jockeys.
MCA released their self-titled debut album in late 1998. He released 'The Tunnel' with Def Jam in 1999, featuring Dr. Dre, Jay-Z, Eminem, LL Cool J, DJ Myth, Method Man, DMX, Nas, and Snoop Dogg.
