Batistuta played for River Plate, where he scored 17 goals and the club won Argentine Primera Division in 1990.
In 1991, Batistuta joined Boxa Juniors, River Plate's arch-rivals. Initially, he found it difficult to give his best but with Oscar Tabarez's support, Batistuta ended the season as the league's top scorer, and the team won the championship.
