Gary Lineker was born into a family of greengrocers in Leicester, right in the heart of England. The soccer legend was born on November 30, 1960. The soccer player is the elder son of Margaret Abbs Lineker and Barry Lineker. He has a younger brother named Wayne Lineker, two years younger than Gary. The boys helped out at Barry's, their mother's shop, and grew up playing cricket and soccer.
Gary went to the Caldecote Road School but later shifted to the City of Leicester College. The former school was known for its Rugby team, but Gary Lineker preferred cricket and soccer. He immediately hit it off and was the captain of the cricket team. In 1976 he moved to play soccer with the Leicester City youth team.

By 1980, he played for Leicester City's senior team as a forward, and they progressed to the first division. He was scoring prolifically and netted 19 goals the following season. By 1984, Gary Lineker got his national team call, and he played his debut match against Scotland when he entered as a substitute. Everton, the defending first division champion, spotted him and signed him up. In 1985, he played nine games for England and scored six goals. He also scored 38 goals from 52 appearances for his new club Everton. Everton reached the FA Cup final but missed out when they lost to Liverpool, but the team did win the FA Charity Shield in 1985.
Everything changed in 1986 when Gary Lineker reached Mexico to represent England in the FIFA World Cup. He scored a hat-trick against Poland, netted twice against Paraguay, and his team progressed into the quarter-final. Diego Maradona led Argentina was up next, and though Gary scored once, England lost after Diego's controversial Hand Of God goal. For his six goals, the English soccer player was awarded the FIFA World Cup's Golden Boot.  
Overnight he became a superstar, and upon his return to England, Spanish club Barcelona poached him. During his three-year stint in Spain, Lineker played in the La Liga, National Cup, and Continental Cup. From 1986 to 1989, he appeared in 137 games and scored 52 goals. He also scored nine goals from seven appearances for England in 1987.
In mid-1989, he returned to England and joined Tottenham Hotspurs. During his three years with the Spurs, Gary played in the English First Division, National Cup, League Cup, and Continental Cup. He was promoted as the England national side captain in 1990 and stayed until 1992. In 1991, he led his Tottenham Hotspurs to the FA Cup Final and won the match.

The former England captain supports Leukemia Busters, Fight For Life, and CLIC Sargent England-based cancer charities. In early 2020, he donated around $175,000 to the Red Cross for Covid virus research.
