On March 8, 1958, Gary Anthony James Webb was born in Hammersmith, London, England. His father, Tony Webb, was a bus driver who worked for British Airways based at Heathrow Airport. His mother is Beryl Webb. Gary's father adopted Gary's cousin John when Gary was seven years old.
Gary Numan started his education at Town Farm Junior School in Stanwell. Later, he went to Ashford County Grammar School and Slough Grammar School. After school, he attended Brooklands Technical College in Weybridge, Surrey.

At the age of 15, Gary Numan started working with various bands. He auditioned as a guitarist for the band The Jam. Unfortunately, he wasn't picked.
Then he met bass guitar player Paul Gardiner when he joined Mean Street and the Lasers. Later, with Paul Gardiner and Jess Lidyard, Gary formed Tubeway Army and was signed to Beggars Banquet Records. Numan held the position of lead singer, songwriter, and record producer for Tubeway Army.
In 1978, a self-titled, new wave-based debut album was released and showed Numan's fascination with synthesizers. In 1979, the single 'Are Friends Electric?' was released through Tubeway Army. The single reached number one in the UK charts. In August, he released the solo single 'Cars' which proved to be a massive hit. His debut solo album, 'The Pleasure Principle', was released in September. The album also reached number one in the UK album charts.
'The Teletour' was the second major tour of his career and kicked off in 1980.
In April 1981, he announced his retirement from touring as he wanted to experiment with jazz, funk, ethereal, and rhythmic pop. After a short period of retirement, he released 'Dance'. Rob Dean worked with Gary on this album. With his previous co-performers Chris Payne, Russell Bell, and Ced Sharpley, Gary Numan released 'Love Needs No Disguise'.
From 1984 to 1990, he continued to release albums and singles under his record label, Numa. He decided to collaborate with Bill Sharpe and they created music together.
From 1991 to 2008 Numan received worldwide acknowledgment for music tours in different countries. Gary Numan has friends like Trent Reznor, Marilyn Manson, and Jess Lidyard who appreciated his work and admired him.
