Iona College has a men's basketball team called Iona Gaels. Gary Springer began playing as a team member after he graduated high school.
In one game, while still in his freshman season, this NBA player had 23 rebounds and 58 points and gave two shots which won their game that day. The first shot that he gave was a buzzer-beater that defeated Wagner by 82-80. The second shot was 20 ft. This was six seconds before the ending time, which helped Iona Gaels to win against the team Holy Cross by a score of 57-56.
In Gaels' total of four seasons, Gary Springer reached postseason three. The first season was played in 1982 NIT, and the second round was played in 1983 NIT. The third round was played in 1984 in the NCAA tournament. After his college was over, Gary Springer was drafted by the Philadelphia 76ers. However, he supposedly was injured and never again played professionally.
