George Lindsey was an American actor and stand-up comedian popular for his role as Goober Pyle on 'The Andy Griffith Show' and its spin-off 'Mayberry R.F.D.' He also appeared on the country music variety show 'Hee Haw' from 1972-1992. He was in various TV shows such as 'The Rifleman', 'Twilight Zone', and 'The Alfred Hitchcock Hour'.

In addition to his acting career, Lindsey was a dedicated philanthropist, raising over $1 million for the Alabama Special Olympics through the George Lindsey Celebrity Weekend and Golf Tournament. He also established the George Lindsey Academic Scholarships at the University of North Alabama and helped create the George Lindsey/UNA Film Festival. George Smith Lindsey was born in Fairfield, Alabama, to George Ross Lindsey, a butcher, and Alice Smith Lindsey. He was an only child, and when he was little, his family moved to Jasper, Walker County, where he was mostly brought up by his grandparents.

Lindsey displayed a keen sense of humor and comedic timing from a young age, and he often spent time in his local theater watching films. He first became interested in acting at age 14 after he saw the musical 'Oklahoma!' in Birmingham. Lindsey was also good at playing football during his high school days.

He attended Walker County High School in Jasper, Alabama, and graduated in 1946. After high school, Lindsey attended Kemper Military School in Boonville, Missouri, and Florence State Teacher's College (called the University of North Alabama as of 2023), where he majored in physical education and biology. He played quarterback on the football team and acted in college plays. He graduated in 1952 with a Bachelor of Science degree.
