As a trainee in the Ethiopian Air Force, he studied air-traffic management and air traffic control in Sweden and Canada. In 1944, he graduated as a sub-lieutenant from the Genet Military School in Holeta, Ethiopia.

Thanks to his aviation experience, Girma Wolde Giorgis became a teacher in air traffic control and flight control in Ethiopia in 1948. He was named chief of civil aviation in 1955 in the federated government of Eritrea. Girma Wolde Giorgis served as the director-general for the Ministry of Trade, Planning, and Industry of Ethiopia, from 1951-1959. He was elected to the Ethiopian parliament's lower chamber in 1961 and served as its president for three years.
On October 8, 2001, Girma Wolde Giorgis was unanimously elected President of Ethiopia by the Ethiopian Parliament for a six-year tenure. The Ethiopian presidency is mostly a ceremonial position with limited influence. The Prime Minister has the majority of the authority. After his first term concluded on October 7, 2007, he was re-elected president.
Girma Worlde Giorgis served in the Ethiopian Air Force as one of the first Ethiopians. He published a book about the principles of airline operations. He was an activist who opposed apartheid in South Africa. As a sub-lieutenant, this Ethiopian politician graduated from the Oletta Military Academy in 1944.
In 1977, following the collapse of Haile Selassie I's imperial government and amid a nationalist insurrection led by the Eritrean People's Liberation Front, Girma Wolde Giorgis was a member of a peace commission established by Ethiopia's temporary military government to handle Eritrean land and sovereignty problems (EPLF). In 1951, Girma became director-general of the Ministry of Trade, Industry, and Planning. He was named Eritrea's Civil Aviation Chief in 1955.
In 1957, Girma Wolde Giotgis was named director-general of the Ethiopian Civil Aviation Authority. Girma was elected to the Imperial Ethiopian Parliament's lower chamber in 1961. He was elected Speaker of the House of Representatives for the third year in a row. In the Ethiopian Federal Democratic Republic's House of People's Representatives, he was elected in 2000.
