Glen Coffee began his career by playing college football.

Though Glen Coffee played in all the 12 games in his freshman season (2005), he was a backup to player Kenneth Derby. His playing minutes were also limited as he was sharing time with Jimmy Johns.

In 2007, he was under a new head coach and there was an improvement in his playing time as well as his performance.

In 2008, Glen Coffee was the season opener of all 14 games. He shared playing time with Roy Upchurch and one other running back, Mark Ingram Jr. In the fourth game of the season, the American football player gave his first 100-yard rushing performance. In the following games he gave his career-best as he rushed for 218 yards which was the most made by an Alabama running back since 1996.

In the next game, Glen Coffee gave 126 yards rushing performance and one touchdown which helped Alabama get a position in the 2008 SEC Championship Game. In the annual Alabama-Auburn football game, Glen Coffee gave a rushing performance of more than 100 yards and one touchdown.

The 2008 season was his best at Alabama where he ran for 1383 yards scoring 10 touchdowns. He was named to the Associated Press All-SEC's first team for his efforts.

In the 2009 NFL Draft, he was selected in the third round by the San Francisco 49ers. Glen Coffee was a backup to Pro Bowl Frank Gore. He decided to forego his final year to enter the NFL 2009 Draft.

Glen Coffee announced his retirement just before the beginning of the 2010 NFL preseason. This was after attending two weeks of training camp. Before retiring from football, he played for one season in 2010. The reason he gave for his retirement was that he was not fully involved in football and that he felt God wants him to choose another path. To finish his college studies, he planned to return to the University Of Alabama.

From 2013-2017, Glen coffee joined the United States Army as he wanted to serve the country.

In 2017, he came out of his retirement and was reelected by the NFL. He is now an assistant coach for the coaching staff of Nick Saban.
