Gloria Estefan was born Gloria María Milagrosa Fajardo Garcia on September 1, 1957, in Havana, Cuba. Her parents were Jose Fajardo and Gloria Garcia. She grew up with her younger sister Becky Garcia. Her family history is quite interesting. Her maternal grandparents were Leonardo Garcia and Consuelo Perez. They were Spanish immigrants. Leonardo Garcia emigrated to Cuba from Pola de Siero, Asturias, Spain. Consuelo Perez was originally from Logrono, Spain. Gloria Estefan's mother, Gloria Fajardo, was nicknamed 'Big Gloria'. She was offered to dub the films of Shirley Temple into the Spanish language but couldn't pursue the offer. She earned a Ph.D. in education in Cuba, but her degrees were destroyed when they moved to the United States during the Cuban Revolution.
Gloria Estefan's paternal grandparents were Jose Manuel Fajardo Gonzalez and Amelia Montano. Amelia Montana was a poet, while Jose Fajardo was one of the first Cuban restaurant owners in Miami, Florida. Gloria Estefan's father served as a Cuban soldier. He was also a motor escort for the wife of Cuban dictator Fulgencio Batista. The Fajardo family was forced to move to Miami in 1959 due to the Cuban Revolution. In 1961, her father was captured by Fidel Castro's army members. He returned after two years of imprisonment in Cuba and joined the US Army, and was sent to fight in the Vietnam War. In 1989, Gloria Estefan started working as a solo artist. In the same year, her best-selling album 'Cuts Both Ways' was released including hit singles such as 'Oye Mi Canto', 'Don't Wanna Lose You', 'Here We Are', 'Get On Your Feet', and 'Cuts Both Ways'.
