Her father was largely Jewish (with Ashkenazi and Sephardi ancestors), but he also had some African lineage, and her mother is predominantly African. Her father passed away while she was a child, and Finding Your Roots, a television genealogy series hosted by Henry Louis Gates Jr., had a part about Reuben.

Reuben was one of six children growing up. Denis Simpson, Reuben's older half-brother was a host of a children's television show and an actor who expired in 2010, while her younger brother, David, expired in 1988.
