About Goodloe Sutton

Howard Goodloe Sutton is an American newspaper editor, publisher, and owner.
He played a significant role in exposing the corruption in Marengo County Sheriff's Office. He published a small weekly newspaper named The Democrat Reporter in Linden, Alabama.
The Democrat Reporter was published for a century by the Sutton Family, and Goodloe Sutton ran it from 1985 to 2019 after purchasing it from his father. During this period in the '90s, Goodloe Sutton published a series of articles that helped in exposing the corrupt county sheriff. He was very well celebrated for investigating the local corruption in the sheriff's office and was also considered for the Pulitzer Prize.
Goodloe Sutton once again became the focus of national attention in early 2019. Still, this time he was faced with acute criticism for he suggested in one of his editorials to bring back the Ku Klux Klan to 'clean out' Washington D.C. He also confirmed the accusation of calling for the White Supremacist hate group in his editorial to the Montgomery Advertiser. He suggested lynching when asked to elaborate on 'cleaning up' Washington D.C. This angered the public and led the University of Southern Mississippi Journalism Department to remove his name from the Journalism Hall Of Fame.
Goodloe Sutton was also disregarded for being racist, sexist, anti-Semitic, anti-Muslim, and homophobic through his editorial work. His hard work and bravery in fighting against corruption were overshadowed by his execrable, racist, and violent editorials. This was further not followed by an apology from Sutton, and he even suggested lynching people in the name of cleaning out the capital. All this indirectly led to his resignation from the post of editor and publisher in February 2019.
The replacement for Goodloe Sutton's post was Elicia R. Dexter, who also resigned less than a month later after signaling interference from Sutton. The newspaper was finally sold in July 2019 to Tommy Wells, with Sutton announcing his retirement. Tommy Wells later reported that Sutton no longer had any involvement with the newspaper or its editorials.
