Hal Linden was born on March 20, 1931, to Charles Lipshitz and Frances Lipshitz in Bronx, New York City. Charles Lipshitz owned a printing shop after immigrating to the United States in 1910.
Linden has a brother, Bernard Lipshitz, who worked as a music professor at the Bowling Green State University. Linden first went to Herman Ridder Junior High School and later attended the High School of Music and Art. He then got into Queens College to study music and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree with a business major from City College of New York. He wanted to be a bandleader and singer in a big band in his youth.
Before fame, Harold changed his name to Hal Linden, inspired by the Linden city of New Jersey. He toured with big bands in the '50s like Bobby Sherwood and Sammy Kaye. He sang and played clarinet and saxophone. In 1952, he was recruited into the United States Army and was posted at Fort Belvoir. He was also a part of the United States Army Band. He decided to take up acting after watching the 'Guys And Dolls' play. In 1954, Linden was discharged from the army.
