As an honor in 2008, Njurunda Sports Club changed its stadium name to Modin & Zetterberg from what was earlier called Njurunda Ishall. When he was a teen, he left Njurunda Sports Club for Swedish Ice Hockey, Timrå IK.

At one point, Jim Nill, the Assistant General Manager of Detroit Red Wings, and Håkan Andersson, the Director of European Scouting, saw his talent in a tournament. Nill said he liked Zetterburg's instinct. Later, he was selected for the Red Wings in 1999. In 2002, he played his rookie season. His debut for the National Hockey League was on October 10, 2002, against San Jose Sharks at the place Joe Louis Arena. In his second rookie season, he could not participate entirely because of his leg injury.

In 2005, Henrik Zetterberg was back on track and shined as one of the leading players. In the absence of the then-captain of the team Steve Yzerman, he was named as the alternative captain. With Mikael Samuelsson, Niklas Kronwall, Nicklas Lidström, and Tomas Holmström, he was nicknamed the 'Swedish Five' in the '90s. Though he was selected for the National Hockey League All-Star Game in 2007, his wrist injury stood as an obstacle.

During the final phase of his contract with the Detroit Red Wings, Henrik Zetterberg again signed a 12-year extension contract with them in 2009. This contract of 12 years is the longest and one of its kind in hockey history. His contribution during the 2009 Stanley Cup playoffs was remarkable, though his team lost against Pittsburgh Penguins.

When Nicklas Lidström announced his retirement as team captain, Henrik Zetterberg was his successor. In 2013, he became the captain of the Detroit Red Wings. His back injury was a significant obstacle in his career. During the 2014 winter Olympics, he had surgery which made him miss esteemed games. He was not seen in the IIHF World Championships also due to his health. In the 2014 Stanley Cup, he entered to play the first couple of games for Detroit Red Wings, while Boston Bruins defeated his team in the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals.

In 2018, Henrik Zetterberg's NHL career ended when Detroit Red Wings' general manager Ken Holland declared he wouldn't be playing anymore due to his back condition. After playing fifteen seasons in the National Hockey League, he officially retired in 2020 as an ice hockey player.

Henrik Zetterberg is known for playing more than a thousand games, scoring more than 300 goals, and registering more than 600 assists at the national level. Apart from this, he played many games, scored considerable goals, and assisted quite a few times for the Swedish National Team at the international level.
