England-born, Henry Akinwande is best known as an experienced and professional British boxer with many titles to his name.

Henry Akinwande started as a boxing noob. He joined the Lynn amateur boxing club in London where he won the Amateur Boxing heavyweight champion for two years, 1988 and 1989. Henry Akinwande defeated another Nigerian and future WBO heavyweight champion, Herbie Hide. Akinwande was in the heavyweight group at the Olympic Games held in Seoul, South Korea, in 1988, where he represented Great Britain.

Henry Akinwande's pro boxing debut was in the fight against Carlton Headley in 1989, which was held in London. Following his debut fight, Akinwande went ahead to record consecutive wins in his first 18 bouts. Among his 18 wins was a knockout victory over J.B. Williamson, in the second round. He also recorded knockout wins over other professional fringe fighters including John Fury, Kimmuel Odum, Eddie Taylor, and Marshall Tillman.

In 1992, Henry Akinwande fought for the European heavyweight title in Berlin, Germany. The fight was against Axel Schulz and after 12 rounds, it was adjudged to be a draw by the referee. The decision was tagged to be in favor of Schulz, as most spectators believed Akinwande won the bout convincingly.

He again challenged Schulz for the vacant European title in 1993, after winning the Commonwealth title by defeating New Zealand's James Thunder. Three judges were appointed and Henry Akinwande was declared the winner by unanimous decision after a bout that lasted 12 rounds. He also defeated erstwhile IBF heavyweight title holder Tony Tucker, Gerard Jones, Brian Sargent, Frankie Swindell, and Calvin Jones at this time.

In 1996, Henry Akinwande challenged American Jeremy Williams for the WBO World Heavyweight Title. He emerged the winner after just three rounds. and went ahead to retain the title twice, after winning Scott Welch, winner of the WBO Intercontinental Title, and Russian Alexander Zolkin by TKO.

Akinwande tested positive for hepatitis B in 1998, thus, disrupting the proposed challenge to Evander Holyfield for the WBA belt. He returned and was victorious in his next eight fights, defeating top opponents Maurice Harris, and Peter McNeeley, Najee Shaheed, Orlin Norris. Reynaldo Minus, Russel Chasteen, Chris Sirengo, and Kenny Craven.

Henry Akinwande was defeated for the second time in the fight against Oliver McCall in 2001. He was dominant all through the fight but began to feel tired at some point giving McCall the opportunity to floor him in the 10th and final round. Akinwande was counted out.

Henry Akinwande recovered excellently after his defeat to McCall and went on to win nine bouts on a roll. He defeated Cisse Salif, Ed Mahone, Timo Hoffman, Anton Nel, and many others to win the IBF Intercontinental title.

He triumphed in the fight against Oleg Platov in 2006 and another against Andriy Oleinyk in 2007. Akinwande then lost to the Czech Republican top prospect Ondřej Pála on July 4, 2008. He lost the bout by a Unanimous decision which eventually turn out to be his final fight.

He was also a two-time IBF Inter-Continental heavyweight champion. He held the first title from May 2003 until June 2004. The second was from December 2005 until November 2006. Henry Akinwande was also the WBO heavyweight champion from June 1996 - June 1997.
