Ira Hayes was famously part of the 'Gila River Indian Community' located in the Maricopa and Pinal counties in Arizona. Ira Hayes was also a part of the Pacific War and fought in Iwo Jima and Bougainville campaigns.

A large section of the society remembers Ira Hayes as one of the six flag raisers captured in the photograph of Joe Rosenthal, popularly known as 'Raising the Flag on Iwo Jima'. Ira Hayes was a part of the film 'Sands of Iwo Jima' where Ira Hayes portrayed himself raising the American flag. Ira Hayes along with Rene Gagnon and 'Navy corpsman' Bradley was a part of the 'Seventh War Loan Drive' with the objective of selling war bonds and reducing the war debt. During this drive, Hayes and others also met President Truman at the White House, Washington D.C where they showed him their positions in the image which captured the flag-raising on Mount Suribachi. Ron Powers and James Bradley later wrote a book titled 'Flags of Our Fathers' in 2000 talking about the journey of John Bradley and five other national heroes who rose to fame following their image of raising the flag on Mount Suribachi. Ira Hayes was born to Joseph Hayes and Nancy Hamilton and was the eldest child of the family. Hayes grew up living with his siblings Harold Hayes, Leonard Hayes, Arlene Hayes, Kenneth Hayes, and Vernon Hayes. Upsettingly, Harold Hayes and Arlene Hayes lost their lives during their infancy. Ira Hayes along with Leonard Hayes and Kenneth Hayes attained their primary education in Sacaton and enrolled at Phoenix Indian School in Arizona for higher education. After Hayes studied at the Phoenix Indian School for two years, he joined the Civilian Conservation Corps in May 1942 and later worked as a carpenter before joining the military.

Ira Hayes undertook Marine paratrooper training at the renowned Marine Parachute School, located at Camp Gillespie in the east of San Diego. Hayes went on to become the first Pima Indian to receive paratrooper wings and he was given the code-name 'Chief Falling Cloud'. Hayes completed his graduation from Parachute Training School in November and was promoted to the military rank of 'Private first class' the following month. Hayes is best remembered for the second flag-raising on Mount Suribachi along with Pfc. Harold Schultz, Sgt. Strank, and some other men. The second flag-raising had to be done because the first flag-raising which was undertaken on the mountain towards the southern part of Iwo Jima was considered too small and thus a larger flag had to be raised. The war hero is remembered for his efforts in the Battle of Iwo Jima, Consolidation of the Northern Solomons, Bougainville Campaign, and the Battle of Vella Lavella. Along with the 3rd Parachute Battalion, Hayes sailed for New Caledonia on March 14, 1943. As a part of the 3rd Parachute Battalion, Hayes fought in the Bougainville Campaign as an automatic rifleman against the Japanese. He was then sent back to Guadalcanal and was posted there till February while the Paramarines were shipped back to California.

Hayes was awarded the Combat Action Ribbon, Navy Occupation Service Medal, World War II Victory Medal, and several others. Some of the other awards Hayes won included the 'Navy Presidential Unit Citation with one 5⁄16" silver star', 'Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with Combat V', and 'American Campaign Medal'.
