She worked as a journalist for several television channels, and during this stint, she had an interview with the famous poet Pablo Neruda. Neruda encouraged her to pursue writing as a career and told her to combine her satirical comments into a book, which became her first book. This is how her debut novel, 'The House Of The Spirits,' which was a message to her ailing grandfather, was born. She started writing the book after she received news that her grandfather was dying, and in her mind, at least this would keep her grandfather's spirit alive. The book was written with the emotion of exorcising the ghosts of Pinochet, the military leader who had started the coup in Chile and forced Isabel to flee the country.
The Latin America born writer has written several popular novels, such as 'Island Beneath The Sea' and 'The Stories Of Eva Luna.' Her book 'Maya's Notebook' gained critical acclaim because of its setting, which moved from Los Angeles, California, to Chile, including Las Vegas. Her early work would often contain elements of magical realism. Her work also had elements of historical fiction, in which she would combine historical events with some myth and fiction to pay homage to women.
In 1995, Allende wrote her book 'Paula' as a homage to her daughter, whom she lost to an error by hospital staff. The book was written as a letter to her daughter. In 2008, she wrote yet another memoir titled 'The Sum of Our Days,' which focuses on her own life, including her husband, grown-up son, and many grandchildren. Isabel Allende has been a visiting lecturer in numerous universities across the globe, teaching literature.
