Harbaugh is well known as the head coach at Western Kentucky University. Besides, Jack is recognized as the father of two sons, namely Jim Harbaugh and John Harbaugh, who are the head coach in the National Football League (NFL).

Jack Harbaugh was born Jack Avon Harbaugh on June 28, 1939, in Crestline, Ohio. He began his career by playing football for Bowling Green University. Later, Harbaugh was a running back for the football team Buffalo Bills. Consequently, he started working as an assistant head coach in several colleges. After several years of serving as the head football coach, Harbaugh finally retired in 2006 but served as the running backs coach for Stanford University's football team's 2009 Sun Bowl.

Jack Avon Harbaugh was born in Crestline, Ohio on June 28, 1939. He was born to William Avon Harbaugh and Marie Evelyn Fisher Harbaugh. In 1957, Harbaugh completed his primary schooling at Crestline High School. He attended Bowling Green State University and played football for the Bowling Green Falcons Football team from 1957-1960. He was named the small college division national champions during his junior year. He was a letterman in basketball and football four and two times, respectively. Besides, during his senior years, Harbaugh was an all-state quarterback.

In 1957, Harbaugh began his career as a college football player for Bowling Green University. He was a three-time letterman during his college. Later, in 1961, he served as a running back in the AFL Draft by the Buffalo Hills.

Subsequently, Jack Harbaugh started his coaching career as an assistant coach at Perrysburg High School. It was during this time that two of his sons were born. Later, Harbaugh served as the head coach at Eaton High School, Ohio in 1964. He was also the head coach of the football team of Xenia High School, Ohio. Likewise, he has been termed the conference coach of the Year and received several championship awards at the Western Ohio League.

From 1968-1981, Jack Harbaugh worked as an assistant head coach at numerous colleges including the University of Iowa, the University of Michigan, the University of San Diego, Stanford University, and Morehead State University. Apart from this, he served as a head coach at Western Michigan University. In 1989, he was elected as the head coach of the football team at Western Kentucky University. Harbaugh also worked as the associate athletic director at Marquette University. At the same university, his daughter's husband, Tom Crean, was serving as the head coach of the basketball team. He served as the coach of Michigan University's football team from 1973–1979. He retired in 2006.
