Crane had his education at Lutheran High School North, situated in St. Louis County, Missouri in the United States. He then pursued his college degree in industrial safety from the University of Central Missouri, formerly known as Central Missouri State University.
In 1976, he joined Tau Kappa Epsilon and also got the chance to be associated with the Central Missouri Mules baseball team.
At the beginning of his college years, he had a major setback when his father died. However, he received support from his coach, Robert N. Tompkins and bucked up to set a bright future for himself.

Crane has tried his hand at multiple industries, but began working after college in the insurance business.
His next venture was Eagle USA Airfreight, which he started by borrowing $10,000 from his sister. The venture was later known as Eagle Global Logistics, in short EGL. Eagle Global Logistics was an information service and supply chain management business that was amalgamated with CEVA Logistics in 2007.
Later on, Crane utilized his profits from EGL to form Crane Capital Group. Crane Capital Group is a foundation that grows real estate businesses across the major cities of Asia. He also possesses the majority of the shares of Crane Worldwide Logistics.
Baseball being one of Crane's major interests, he had attempted to become a baseball owner in 2008 and tried it again in 2009 and 2010 as well, but could not succeed in his attempts. Finally, in 2011, he purchased the Houston Astros of Major League Baseball (MLB).
Some of his other businesses include ventures in the restaurant business, a commercial safety supply called Crane Safety, and a software company as well. The two restaurants he owns are Osso and Kristalla, and Potente.
The software company, Modiant, that Crane started, focuses on digitizing freight and transportation management.

Crane has donated to several charities, among which the most prominent one is the donation of $1.2 million that he contributed to the school he went to in his childhood. The fund was given to improve the athletic facilities and also to expand the campus area.
He is also known to be the largest donor of 1998 because of his donation worth $1.2 million to upgrade the CMSU baseball stadium. As a part of the donation, Crane renamed the stadium James R. Crane Stadium in memory of his coach Robert Tompkins who motivated him to continue his studies.
Astros Foundation is one of the major strengths that help him in donating to the needy. The foundation was started after he bought Astros and after six years of ownership, the foundation has grown from $50,000 to $12 million, under his leadership.
The Astros Ownership Group and the Astros Foundation together have donated $4 million to the Hurricane Harvey relief fund in 2017.
In the pandemic of 2020, Crane donated 100,000 COVID test swabs and personal protective equipment, along with $400,000 to local hospitals.
Crane, together with Astros, raised $2.6 million in 2020 for the Astros Foundation. In 2021 there was an initiative taken by the Astros Foundation to collect food, diapers, and other essentials and supply them to the areas in Louisiana that had been badly affected by hurricanes.
In return, free tickets were distributed to those who donated these items. Crane has not limited himself to this only, but also provided 30 large trucks on behalf of Crane Worldwide Logistics, to transport the collected items to the needed areas.
