He was also cast in supporting parts in TV series like 'S.W.A.T.' and 'Little House On The Prairie'.

At the age of 12, McNichol made his first film appearance. He played an uncredited part in a film titled 'Sunshine'. In the network TV series 'The Fitzpatricks', he played the younger brother Jack in his first regular leading role. On the program, Michele Tobin portrayed his sister Mo. They eventually worked on 'California Fever'. James McNichol sang the theme song of the show. He also collaborated with his sister Kristy to record an album in 1978. The album was titled 'Kristy and Jimmy McNichol' and was created by Phil & Mitch Margo.

One major song from the album, a rendition of The Chiffons' 'He's So Fine' peaked at number 70 on the Billboard Hot 100. The siblings also made an appearance as co-hosts in a youth-oriented sketch comedy program. It was in an ABC All-Star Saturday Preview Special during the autumn of 1978. The program included musical guests, including the Bee Gees and Donny Osmond. Kristy had a manic episode when the two were in France, and she was later identified as having bipolar illness. As a result, McNichol and his sister stopped performing together.

After that, McNichol left the music business. He later said that he was aware of the outcome. One year is a huge high, and nobody remembers who you are the following year. The continuous singing and traveling eventually take a toll.

After 'California Fever' ended, he was chosen to host the Jimmy McNichol Special. This program debuted in April 1980. He worked as a talk show host for a weekly program called 'Hollywood Teen'.

In the 1979 teen drama 'Champions: A Love Story', he plays the lead role of an ex-hockey player who falls in love with a figure skater. Later, he had appearances in a number of other popular television films. He performed in the suspenseful television film 'Blinded by the Light' as a youngster trying to flee a religious cult. Additionally, he produced a number of low-budget motion pictures. Some of them include 'Smokey Bites the Dust' and the 1982 horror film 'Butcher, Baker, Nightmare Maker. The movie starred Susan Tyrrell and Bill Paxton.

Jimmy McNichol agreed to play Josh Clayton on 'General Hospital' in 1984. Throughout the '80s, he played in a band as Jimmy James. In the 1991 television film 'Reason for Living', he played Valentine McCallum, Jill Ireland's son. It was his last significant acting appearance.
