About Johannes Kepler

Johannes Kepler is a 17th-century key figure known for his contribution to the scientific revolution.

Kepler is a German astronomer, mathematician, astrologer, natural philosopher, and writer. He was popular and famous for his laws of planetary motion and his books 'Astronomia Nova', 'Epitome Astronomiae Copernicanae', and 'Harmonice Mundi'.

Kepler's observations also provided one of the foundations for Newton's theory of universal gravitation. Kepler's first law of planetary motion stated that all planets move in ellipses with the sun as a focal point. His second law establishes the fact that all planets occupy an equal area in equal times. The square of a periodic interval equals or is the cube of the mean distance, according to his third law.

On December 27, 1571, Kepler was born, and he died on November 15, 1630. He was 58 years old when he passed away.

Childhood And Education

Kepler was born in Imperial City of Weil Der Stadt. His grandfather, Sebaid Kepler, was Lord Mayor of the city. He was the younger brother to a sister and two brothers, and his father, Heinrich Kepler, abandoned them when Johannes Kepler was eight years old. His mother, Katharina Guldenman, was the daughter of the in-housekeeper, and she was an herbalist and healer. Since childhood, Kepler was profound in mathematics. He was introduced to astronomy during his schooling age and developed a strong interest in it. Kepler observed the Great Comet at the age of six in 1577. After studying in Latin school, Johannes completed his higher education at the University of Tübingen.

Career And Professional Highlights

Best Known For…

Kepler was appointed a mathematics teacher for a Protestant school in Graz, now known as Syria, Austria. From 1594 to 1600, he published many prognostications and official calendars, which enriched his prominence as an astrologer. Johanne had excellent knowledge of both the Copernican system of planetary motion and the Ptolemaic system, with the help and guidance of Michael Maestlin, a mathematics professor. He also published a few ideas he had pondered as a student in the 'Mysterium Cosmographicum', which he published a year later in 1596. Kepler wrote 'Astronomia Nova' in an attempt to calculate the orbit of Mars.

Kepler intended to experiment with his thesis from 'Mysterium Cosmographicum', which was founded on the Mars data, but he gauged that the outcome would take two years. Though he wanted to start immediately, the spiritual and political tension in Graz meant that he could not return to Brahe with his family immediately to conduct astronomical studies. Finally, with the help of Johannes Jessenius and Tycho, he could execute and analyze planetary observations and write against Tycho's rival, Ursus. After Tycho passed, Kepler became his successor and took on the role of imperial mathematician for the next 11 years.

In 1609, Kepler published his writings in the form of the book 'New Astronomy'.

Kepler's first significant astronomical assignment, 'Mysterium Cosmographicum' ('Cosmographic Mystery') 1596, was the first printed justification of the Copernican System. Eventually, Kepler's theories related to peers' laws were approved and finally issued in the 'Epitome Of Copernican Astronomy'. Kepler proclaimed to have had an epiphany on July 19, 1595, while teaching in Graz. After pointing to this theory, Kepler began testing with third-dimensional polyhedra. He discovered that each of the five Platonic solids could be etched and orbited by spherical orbs; nesting these solids, each wrapped in a sphere, within one another would beget six layers resembling the six known planets. Kepler started working with Galileo Galilei and even published his telescopic observations on the satellites orbiting various planets.

Kepler played a crucial role in the 17th century as he established Kepler's laws.

Other Interesting Johannes Kepler Facts And Trivia

  • Johannes Kepler did preliminary work in optics and developed an improved interpretation of the refracting telescope.
  • In 1611, he designed a refracting telescope for his astronomical observations and named it the Keplerian telescope.
  • Kepler strongly supported and endorsed Galileo's discoveries.
  • Johannes Kepler is among the first to take stellar parallax as a reference to determine the earth's orbit.
  • Johannes Kepler is the first astronomer who proved that planetary motion around the sun is in elliptical paths.
