Career And Professional Highlights

Best Known For…

During his career, he formed the West Compass Trio, a comedic group Belushi founded in Chicago with Steve Beshekas and Tino Insana, drawing the eye of Bernard Sahlins, the creator of the Second City. When John joined The Second City in 1971, he had the opportunity to meet Harold Ramis, Brian Doyle-Murray, and Joe Flaherty. In 1972, John Belushi, Chevy Chase, and Christopher Guest performed in the Off-Broadway spoof of Woodstock known as 'National Lampoon Lemmings'. John then relocated to New York City and started working as an actor, writer, and director for 'The National Lampoon Radio Hour'. He first met Dan Aykroyd in Toronto in 1974, the same year that 'The National Lampoon Show' toured the United States.

Chevy Chase, Michael O'Donoghue, and Lorne Michaels recommended Belushi to the show's producers in 1975, who invited him to audition for 'NBC's Saturday Night. Along with Chase, Aykroyd, Laraine Newman, Garrett Morris, Jane Curtin, and Gilda Radner, John was a founding member of the program's cast that ultimately took the name 'Saturday Night Live. Samurai Futaba, the Blues Brothers (with Aykroyd), Olympia Café owner Pete Dionisopoulos, and other characters played by Belushi on 'SNL' are just a few examples.

He subsequently starred in the 1978 movies 'Animal House' and 'Goin' South'. In 2001, 'Animal House' was chosen for preservation in the Library of Congress's National Film Registry because it was "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant." It was also ranked #1 on Bravo's list of the '100 Funniest Movies' and #279 on 'Empire' magazine's list of the 500 Greatest Movies of All Time. In 1979, Belushi acted in the drama 'Old Boyfriends' and the war comedy '1941', directed by Steven Spielberg. Then, in 1980, he and Aykroyd had a leading role in the musical comedy 'The Blues Brothers.

They also issued the albums 'Briefcase Full Of Blues' and 'Made In America' as the Blues Brothers in 1978. John made his film debut in the romantic comedy 'Continental Divide' the same year he played Earl Keese in 'Neighbors', which would end up being his final performance. Aykroyd was scripting 'Ghostbusters' at the time of John's passing with plans to star alongside Belushi; Bill Murray ultimately played John's part.

Belushi was chosen to take part in an off-Broadway production of Lemmings in 1973. Lemming is a collection of comedy sketches created by the staff of the National Lampoon, a well-known but unusual humor publication. He garnered praise for his performance on the show.

Producer Lorne Michaels invited Belushi to join the cast of his brand-new late-night comedy program, 'Saturday Night Live', two years later.

On October 11, 1975, Saturday Night Live's television debut showcased nine incredibly funny comedians who dared to break new ground. Dan Aykroyd, Chevy Chase, George Coe, Jane Curtin, Garrett Morris, Laraine Newman, and Gilda Radner were all there, in addition to Belushi. Belushi quickly became one of the show's breakout stars as it quickly gained popularity. His most well-known characters included a samurai with a sword, a killer bee, and an alien with a cone-shaped head named Kuldroth. Belushi made fun of the rich and famous with humorous takes on people like Henry Kissinger, Truman Capote, William Shatner, and Elizabeth Taylor.

Belushi married Judith Jacklin, his high school love, in 1976, shortly after he began the program. Two years later, he transitioned to the big screen with John Landis's smash comedy National Lampoon's 'Animal House'. One of the movie's most enduring characters was Bluto Blutarsky, played by Belushi. His classic quips included "toga, toga, toga" and "food battle," He was a profoundly offensive, barely vocal frat brother. One of the most well-known college comedies of all time features Bluto and the rest of his Delta House brothers wreaking havoc on their institution.

The other 1978 movie project Belushi was less successful. He made a brief cameo appearance in the Jack Nicholson and Mary Steenburgen western flop 'Goin' South'. The next year, he co-starred with Talia Shire in the critically acclaimed film 'Old Boyfriends', which was not well received. Fans of Belushi wanted to see him in a Bluto-like role again, not in a dramatic one. In 1941, he made a comedic comeback as Captain Will Bill Kelso. The movie was partially based on an actual event when, following the attack on Pearl Harbor, a Japanese submarine was seen off the West Coast. Belushi was a hysterical National Guard pilot who attempted to defend a small Californian town under Japanese attack with the help of a few other worried inhabitants, including an overzealous tank sergeant played by Aykroyd. The Steven Spielberg-directed movie was a total failure and garnered many negative reviews.

Belushi and Aykroyd were close friends in real life. The two created the Blues Brothers, a blues parody act while performing on Saturday Night Live. The duo toured the nation with a support band and released the somewhat successful 1978 'Briefcase Full Of Blues' album. Despite leaving Saturday Night Live in 1979, Belushi and Aykroyd continued to collaborate as their musical personas. In 1980, they helped bring Jake and Elwood Blues to the big screen. The Blues Brothers begin when 'Joliet' Jake Blues (Belushi) is released from jail. He gets picked up by his brother Elwood (Aykroyd), and the two head to the Chicago orphanage where they were raised. They discover they have been sent on "a mission from God" to save the orphanage there. To raise money to carry out their objective, The Blues Brothers attempt to reunite their former band members. Crazy vehicle chases, neo-Nazis, and pretty much everything else but the kitchen sink were all featured in the outlandish comedy. Several musical cameos by accomplished recording artists like Ray Charles, John Lee Hooker, Aretha Franklin, Cab Calloway, and James Brown were also included in the movie.

John Belushi donated Blues Brothers memorabilia to a charitable auction. Belushi uses some of his wealth to invest in real estate and donate money to charities. The Starkey Hearing Foundation, Eblen Charities, Safety Harbor Kids, Soles4Souls, and Bear Necessities Pediatric Cancer Foundation are a few of the charities that Belushi has supported.
