John rose to prominence as a three-time champion of the WWF Tag Team during the Attitude Era. He won the WWE Championship in the year 2004. When he entered the professional wrestling ring, he would don his characteristic cowboy hat.
He won the Intercontinental Championship immediately before his retirement in 2009. In addition to this, John was also the 10th Grand Slam Champion and the 20th Triple Crown Champion in WWE history.
Before being a professional wrestler, John coached football at Trinity Valley Community College. In addition to this, he played for NCAA Division at Abilene Christian University.
At Abilene Christian University, he spent two years on the offensive line, earning All-Lone Star Conference first-team distinctions in his junior and senior years. John started all ten games as the correct tackle for the team San Antonio Riders in the American Football World League in 1991.
John began his professional wrestling career in Texas, where he was coached by Black Bart and Brad Rheingans of the Global Wrestling Federation. John's initial role in his debut match was John Hawk, the Windham brothers' fictional cousin. He joined the National Wrestling Alliance when the GWF folded in September 1994.
In January 1995, John defeated Kevin Von Erich to win the NWA North American Heavyweight Championship. John acquired a contract with the World Wrestling Federation (WWF) in 1995 and made his debut in the 1996 show titled 'WWF Superstars of Wrestling.' He formed The New Blackjacks with his narrative cousin Barry Windham in February 1997. Due to Windham's injuries, the partnership split in 1997, and John only competed on television as Blackjack Bradshaw on rare occasions.
John paired up with former Nation of Domination leader Faarooq to create the Acolytes Protection Agency (APA), a tag team controlled by the Jackyl, on Sunday Night Heat just before Survivor Series 1998. In May 1999, the APA defeated Kane and X-Pac to win their first WWF Tag Team Championship.
On Raw Is War in October 2001, John defeated The Hurricane to win the WWF European Championship. He injured his left biceps at a home show in September 2002.
In 2003, John returned on 'SmackDown!' when he and Faarooq rescued the Undertaker from Chuck Palumbo and Johnny Stamboli, rejoining the APA along the way.
Layfield's book 'Have More Money Now' on financial management was published in 2003.
In the year 2004, John was hired by CNBC, but he left the channel to join Fox News as a commentator.
John reappeared in the ring in November 2006 during the main event in Dublin, Ireland. In response to a challenge from Jericho, JBL revealed on the December 17, 2007, edition of Raw that he would continue his career.
In the March 2011 edition of Raw, John made his comeback to WWE as Michael Cole's choice for a special guest referee for his WrestleMania XXVII encounter versus Jerry Lawler. In March 2012, he inducted Ron Simmons, his former tag team partner and real-life best friend, into the WWE Hall of Fame.
John began presenting The JBL and Renee Show on WWE's YouTube site in November 2012, alongside Michael Cole and Renee Young (formerly known as The JBL Show and The JBL and Cole Show). In May of 2015, the series came to an end.
In September 2017, John announced his departure from the SmackDown Live commentary team to concentrate on humanitarian work both within and outside of WWE, particularly as a Beyond Sport Global Ambassador.
The Acolytes attended the Raw Silver Jubilee event in January 2018, where they played the game of poker with other celebrities. He delivers commentary at Tribute to the Troops events regularly.
In the spring of 2018, Major League Rugby, a professional rugby union, announced John Charles Layfield and James Kennedy as the co-founder of the club's new expansion team in New York.
