John has both German as well as American citizenship. The soccer player was raised in Berlin, Germany, and has never lived in the United States. At the young age of five, John started playing soccer. Because of his friends, he joined the Hertha BSC youth academy and later signed a professional contract. He was considered among the top five defenders in the Bundesliga's second division in 2012.

John Brooks started his journey as a soccer player, playing several games in the United States under 20, under 23 teams, and Germany under 20 team. In September 2010, he made his international debut for the United States Under-20 team.
In Hertha's number 2, John Brooks made his professional debut as a starter. He played 29 games and made the team win the league title, scoring in the season's final game.
John had his Bundesliga debut in August 2013, where he scored against the Eintracht Frankfurt and Hertha BSC won. However, his appearance was limited due to an injury, and he missed the April 2014 matches.
According to the German magazine named Kicker, John Brooks was called up by the United States senior national team for a friendly match against Bosnia and Herzegovina in July 2013.
