John Harbaugh, currently the coach for Baltimore Ravens, was born on September 23, 1962, in Toledo, Ohio.
John Harbaugh had football in his blood from a young age and grew up playing the game. A graduate of Pioneer High School in Ann Arbor, he was brought up imbibing the philosophies of the game along with brother Jim at home.
He won the Football Scholar-Athlete Award playing varsity football as a defensive back at Miami University, Ohio. It was during this time that he earned his degree in political science.
After graduating from Miami University in 1984, John Harbaugh went back to finish his master’s degree from Western Michigan University and concentrated on a coaching career in the National Football League. This took him to various assistant coaching jobs at several universities, including the University of Pittsburgh and the University of Cincinnati. His moment of glory came in 1999 when he was appointed the head coach of the Oakland Raiders. Thus became one of the youngest head coaches in NFL history at 36.
But he had to wait a little more to fulfill his ultimate dream, being the head coach for the Baltimore Ravens. Finally, in 2008 he got an offer to be the head coach for the Ravens. He had a super successful first season with the Ravens and has since regularly led the team to playoff berths through successive seasons.
He even led the Ravens to the Super Bowl in 2013, where his team faced the San Francisco 49ers, which was incidentally coached by his own brother Jim Harbaugh.

John was raised by his parents Jackie and Jack Harbaugh in Toledo and has two siblings, Jim and Joani. His father Jack himself was a football player for the New York Titans and later worked as a coach in college football for more than 40 years. His mother is of Sicilian and Polish descent and his father is half Irish and half German. At Miami University in Ohio, John Harbaugh played college football where he was a three-year starter at linebacker while as a senior he earned All-America honors.
Harbaugh's graduate school was Pioneer High School in Ann Arbor. His father Jack, at the time, was an assistant under Bo Schembechler at the University of Michigan. John Harbaugh attended college and played varsity football as a defensive back at Miami University, from where he graduated in 1984.
Miami University has since as a tribute to John, constructed a bronze statue in the Cradle of Coaches with other graduates who went on to become coaching greats, like Bo Schembechler, Paul Brown, Weeb Ewbank, and Ara Parseghian. This was done in 2013 as an honor to him for graduating from the school and earning his Super Bowl victory in the same year.

Hailing from the small town of Toledo, John began his coaching career in the mid-80s, serving as an assistant coach at Western Michigan, then moving on to the University of Pittsburgh, Morehead State, Indiana University. His debut at the NFL happened in 1998 when the Philadelphia Eagles' head coach Ray Rhodes hired him. John spent the next nine seasons as the special team's coordinator and defensive backs coach for the Eagles.
John was appointed the third-ever head coach of the Baltimore Ravens in 2008 as Jason Garrett, who was the first choice, chose to remain with the Dallas Cowboys after getting a raise and promotion as assistant head coach. Though he wasn't one of the favorites for the position of head coach as he had no prior head coaching experience at any level, never was an offensive or defensive coordinator in the NFL, he caught the eye of the team owner Steve Bisciotti and Vice President of Player Personnel or General Manager Ozzie Newsome. Moreover, New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick had also recommended John Harbaugh to the Ravens owner by phone during the interview process.
In John's first season, he guided the Ravens to an 11–5 regular-season record, catapulting them to qualify for the playoffs as a wild card team. He further led the team, during the playoffs, to stupendous victories over the Miami Dolphins and Tennessee Titans before they lost in the AFC Championship Game to the Pittsburgh Steelers.
In 2009, John named Greg Mattison as the defensive coordinator for the Ravens. Previously Mattison had served as linebacker coach and defensive coordinator for his father, Jack, at Western Michigan University from 1981–1986. 2020 saw John Harbaugh lead the Ravens to a second position in the AFC North with an 11-5 record, a wild card berth as the fifth seed, plus it was their first playoff win since 2014 in a Wild Card win over the Tennessee Titans. The victory helped the Ravens make amends for their disheartening loss at the playoff in the previous year and gave reigning MVP Lamar Jackson his first postseason win. This win also broke the NFL record for most road playoff games victories.

The Ravens led by John have won 145 games, including playoffs since he began as the coach in 2008. In NFL this is the fourth-most win over the same period, and interestingly he has surpassed Brian Billick by notching up most wins by a head coach in the Ravens' franchise history. With John Harbaugh as the Baltimore Ravens head coach in the past 13 years, the Ravens have had ten winning seasons and lost only one season.
Since 2008, his appearance in 19 playoff games is the second-most by any head coach in the NFL. Under his guidance, the Ravens are only one of four teams to have earned a playoff berth in nine seasons in the past 13 years. The Ravens are also one of four teams to qualify for the playoffs in all of the past three seasons from 2018-2020.
Moreover, he is the only head coach in NFL history to win a playoff game in all of his first four and five seasons. Add to that, his distinction of being the only head coach in NFL history to win a playoff game in six of the first seven seasons of one's coaching career. Other than winning the Super Bowl XLVII, in 2019, Harbaugh has guided the Ravens to three AFC Championship appearances, four AFC North division championships, and a franchise record of 14-2.
