Born in San Antonio in Texas, John Quiñones grew up in his parents' household that mainly spoke Spanish, and he could not learn English until he was six. Quiñones started going to a local school when he was six. His mother was Maria Quiñones, and Bruno Quiñones was his father.

Unfortunately, Quiñones' father lost his job as a janitor when he was 13. Hence, the Quiñoneses joined migrant farmers in a caravan that used to travel to Traverse City, Michigan, for the cherry harvesting season. During the summer, the family of John Quiñones went towards Toledo, Ohio, following the migrant route, to pick tomatoes. John Quiñones has two sisters named Irma Quiñones and Rosemary Quiñones.

In 1982, John Quiñones began his journey at ABC News. Initially, he was a general assignment correspondent in Miami. Soon, he was a co-anchor on the program 'Primetime' for ABC News. This led him to another ABC News show, but this time as a host for 'What Would You Do?'
