Jordan McCabe played college basketball for Kaukauna High School in Kaukauna, Wisconsin, for four years under head coach Michael Schalow. As a sophomore, he was voted Fox Valley Association (FVA) Player of the Year and led the team to the WIAA Division 2 state championship, scoring 24 points in the championship game.

McCabe committed to West Virginia before his junior year, rejecting offers from DePaul, Minnesota, and Missouri, among others. Jordan McCabe averaged 25.1 points per game as a junior and averaged 26.7 points and 7.8 assists per game as a senior, earning FVA co-Player of the Year honors alongside Tyrese Haliburton and being voted Wisconsin Mr. Basketball. He guided Kaukauna to yet another WIAA Division 2 state title.

Jordan McCabe led all scorers with 32 points in the championship game, scored his team's final eight points, and hit the game-winning shot with 3.5 seconds remaining.

The basketball player made his West Virginia debut in a loss to Buffalo on November 9, 2018. On February 26, 2019, he produced 25 points, 11 assists, and six steals in 50 minutes against TCU, all of which were freshman season highs. McCabe became the first college player since Ohio's D. J. Cooper in 2010 to record at least those numbers in a single game. He was selected Big 12 Conference Newcomer of the Week on March 4.

Jordan McCabe averaged 5.8 points and 2.5 assists per game as a freshman, shooting 32.2 percent from the floor and leading his team with 88 total assists. He was named to the Big 12 Academic All-Rookie Team. McCabe's shooting woes persisted in his sophomore season. Despite starting 29 of his 31 games as a sophomore, he scored a season-high 10 points twice and averaged 3.1 points in 13.5 minutes a game. Jordan McCabe averaged 2.2 points and 1.4 assists per game as a junior. He transferred to UNLV for his senior year.
