Del Potro had won his first Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) title in Stuttgart, Germany, the year before, and he went on to win three more titles that year. Del Potro continued to win titles on the ATP tour over the next few years, but he was hampered by wrist injuries that forced him to participate less.
He became the first tennis player in history to defeat both Federer and Nadal in the same tournament. He also reached the 2018 US Open final.
On October 6, 2008, Del Potro was ranked in the top ten by the ATP for the first time. He reached the world No. 4 ranking in January 2010 but withdrew from the rest of the season due to a wrist injury in his right hand.
