Judith Ann Jamison is an American choreographer and renowned dancer born on May 10, 1943. She is the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater's artistic director emerita. Jamison has earned various honors, including the Kennedy Center Honor in 1999 and the National Medal of Arts in 2001. In 2011, Judith Jamison was named artistic director emeritus of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater.

John Jamison Sr. and Tessie Brown Jamison had Judith Jamison in 1943. Her father instilled in her the ability to play the piano and the violin. From a young age, she was exposed to Philadelphia's thriving art scene. Her parents and older brother raised her here in Philadelphia. She used to dance with Mikhail Baryshnikov. Before becoming famous, Judith Jamison began her dance instruction at Judimar School of Dance at the age of six. Marion Cuyjet, who later was one of Jamison's early teachers, taught her there. Judith Jamison studied modern dance and classical ballet under Cuyjet's direction. Cuyjet's classes were always filled with a sense of performance and theatricality since the Judimar studios were viewed as a 'holy place.' Jamison began dancing on pointe at the age of eight and began taking training in acrobatics, tap, and the Dunham style. Jamison graduated from Judimar High School at 17 and began her academic studies at Fisk University. Judith Jamison was transferred to the University of the Arts to study dance with Nadia Chilkovsky, James Jamieson, and Yuri Gottschalk after three semesters at the Philadelphia Dance Academy. Judith decided to take a break from being an artistic director to form The Jamison Project, a group of dancers.

In a duet choreographed by Alvin Ailey in 1976, she performed alongside many notable dancers, including ballet icon Mikhail Baryshnikov. In 1988, Judith founded the Jamison Project, a 12-member troupe. Jamison took over as creative director of the Ailey group and school after Ailey's death in 1989. Judith became the first African American woman to direct a large modern dance group. Dancing Spirit, Jamison's autobiography co-written with Howard Kaplan, was published in 1993.

Divining, Forgotten Time, Hymn, Love Stories (with additional choreography by Robert Battle and Rennie Harris), and Among Us are some of Ms. Jamison's notable works.
