Willow Crest Grade School in Mokena and Lincoln-Way High School in New Lenox were Karla DeVito's schools. Prior to fame, Karla DeVito was runner-up for homecoming queen at Lincoln-Way High School. She majored in drama at Loyola University in Chicago. She joined the Chicago cast of 'Godspell' during her freshman year.

Karla studied with Jo Forsberg at the Second City Company in Chicago from 1971 to 1972 and was a member of Bill Murray's Second City children's theater ensemble. She was in the cast of the musical 'Hair' in 1973.

Karla DeVito went on to work as a backup singer for Bruce Springsteen, Meat Loaf, and Blue Oyster Cult. DeVito rose to prominence as a solo artist, opening for Hall & Oates and Rick Springfield.

Karla DeVito began her career in 1972 when she joined the national cast of 'Godspell'. She joined the cast of Jim Steinman's musical 'Neverland', which had a run as a workshop production at the Kennedy Center in 1977, after becoming the lead singer of the band Orchestra Luna.

Karla DeVito went on the 'Bat Out Of Hell' tour with Meat Loaf and Jim Steinman to promote the album two months later. Karla DeVito returned to the theater after completing this tour, appearing in an off-Broadway production of Cole Porter's 'Jubilee' and LaMama's production of 'A Midsummer Night's Dream'.

The singer subsequently went on to Broadway to play the lead in 'The Pirates of Penzance', where she met her future husband, Robby Benson.

On Jim Steinman's sole solo album, 'Bad for Good', the American actress sang 'Dance in My Pants' and appeared in the accompanying music video.

DeVito's debut solo album, 'Is This a Cool World or What?' was released in 1981, and the track 'Bloody Bess' was written as a rock musical about a female pirate in the 17th century.

Karla DeVito also sang background vocals for Blue Öyster Cult and The Sorrows. In the '80s, she opened gigs for Hall & Oates and Rick Springfield as a solo performer.

'Wake 'Em Up in Tokyo', DeVito's second album, was released by A&M Records in 1986. 'We Are Not Alone', one of her songs, was featured in the film 'The Breakfast Club' (1985). DeVito performed in South Carolina in 1989 and then again in 1990 as part of 'An Evening of Andrew Lloyd Webber'.

Karla DeVito co-starred in the 1990 film 'Modern Love' and sang on two of the soundtrack's songs. In 2002, DeVito recorded the role of Elizabeth for the CD recording of Graham Russell's rock opera 'The Heart Of The Rose'. She sang backup vocals on Meat Loaf's 'Braver Than We Were' in 2016.
