Howard was extremely tall as a child, and students in high school teased him with the nickname 'Stork.' He blossomed in Manhasset High School in Long Island on the basketball team as a starter. He rejected many basketball scholarships during this time, as he wanted to prioritize academics. While pursuing his graduation from Amherst College in 1966, he set out as a captain of the basketball team. He was a born leader, who joined the choir. He was part of the Cappella singing group known as 'The Zumbyes.' His interest in singing pushed him to apply to the Yale School of Drama. However, after finishing his master's, he made his entry into Broadway.
In 1999, he graduated from Kent University with a Master of Fine Arts in Acting as a returning professional.
