Kevin Kline was born in St. Louis, Missouri, to his father, Robert Joseph Kline, and his mother, Margaret Kline. His father was a music lover and an opera singer who started a record bar and a record store. Kline grew up with his older sister Kate and his two younger brothers, Alexander and Christopher. He attended Saint Louis Priory School to complete his graduation in 1965. The school named its new theater Kevin Kline in his honor. He started studying, composing, and conducting music at Indiana University, Bloomington and was a classmate of American actor Jonathan Banks. Before completing his graduation, he was a co-founder of the Vest Pocket Players and an off-campus theatrical troupe. He was awarded a scholarship to the newly formed drama division of the Juilliard School in 1970. While studying at Juilliard School, he studied singing with American voice teacher and pianist Beverley Peck Johnson.
