Kovačić primarily plays as a central midfielder with a box-to-box role but is well suited in deeper, left-sided attacking positions. Before joining Chelsea FC in 2018, Mateo Kovačić played for two other big European clubs, Inter Milan and Real Madrid.

At 16, Mateo Kovačić began his professional soccer career with the Croatian team, Dinamo Zagreb, and went on to win a couple of league titles. Kovačić then moved to the Italian club Inter Milan in 2013 in a deal worth around $16 million. The central midfielder wore the #10 shirt at the club but was transferred to Real Madrid after a few seasons due to 'Financial Fair Play' regulations. Real Madrid paid a fee of around €29 million for the transfer of Mateo Kovačić. Kovačić joined Real Madrid in 2015 and signed a six-year contract with the Spanish club.
