Dean Stockwell's full name is Robert Dean Stockwell. On March 5, 1936, he was born in North Hollywood, California, the United States, to a family of actors. His parents were Harry Stockwell, a lyric baritone singer and actor in the New York production of Oklahoma, and Elizabeth Stockwell, a vaudeville actress. Dean Stockwell's family consisted of his parents and his brother Guy Stockwell. Guy Stockwell is also an actor.
Harry voiced the character of Prince Charming in 'Snow White.' As he learned about the play 'Innocent Voyage' written by Paul Osborne, who was searching for child actors while working at Broadway in Oklahoma!, Elizabeth sent both of her children to auditions. The audition was successful, and Dean got a minor role in the play and managed an MGM contract.
Dean Stockwell completed his education at Alexander Hamilton High School, Los Angeles. He went to the University of California in Berkeley for a year and then dropped out.

Dean Stockwell began his career as a child actor when he portrayed a minor role in Paul Osborne's play 'Innocent Voyage.' He had a small role in the popular drama 'The Valley of Decision' in 1945. In the same year, he was given a more significant role in 'Anchors Aweigh' by producer Joe Pasternak where he portrayed the role of Kathryn Grayson's nephew. He acted alongside Frank Sinatra, Gene Kelly, and Errol Flynn.
After the film gained popularity, MGM cast him as a key character in 'The Green Years' in 1946. He played the character of an Irish Catholic orphan Robert Shannon who grew up in a Scottish Presbyterian house.
He was cast as a supporting actor in 'The Romance of Rosy Ridge' in 1947, 'The Arnelo affair' in 1947, and 'Song of the Thin Man' in 1947. He played the role of Gregory Peck's son in the 20th Century Fox's Gentleman's Agreement' in 1947 and appeared as an orphaned runaway in 'Deep Waters' in 1948. He played the lead role in the RKO Pictures 'The Boy With Green Hair' in 1948.
After being an adult, Dean portrayed the role of Judd Steiner in the broadway adaptation of 'Compulsion.' He appeared on the television shows 'Quantum Leap' as Rear Admiral Al Calavicci, 'JAG' as Navy Secretary Edward Sheffield, and 'Battlestar Galactica' as Brother Cavil, among others.
