But before that he actually enrolled at West Lafayette as a Parade All American recruit. He wanted to follow a degree in electrical engineering, and he accepted a full scholarship to play football at Purdue University.

He used to play as a cornerback and kick returner. Sometimes he also used to find time on offense as a running back and wide receiver. Rod was named an All-American defensive back in 1985 and 1986. Rod was also named an All-American returner in 1986. He was a three-time All-Big Ten first-team selection.

During his final year of the college game, Rod gained over 150 combined rushing and receiving yards in addition to making ten tackles. He led Purdue to victory over arch-rival Indiana.

Rod Woodson was selected in the first round of the 1987 NFL Draft by the Pittsburgh Steelers. He played for Pittsburgh from 1987 to 1996. Rod also played for the San Fransisco 49ers in 1997. He played for the Baltimore Ravens from 1998 to 2001. Then for the Oakland Raiders from 2002-2003.

After the 1996 NFL season, Pittsburgh offered Woodson a four-year contract. But unfortunately, he declined the contract offer from the Pittsburgh Steelers hours before the 1997 NFL Draft.

Then in 1997, he signed a three-year contract with the San Fransisco 49ers. But in an effort to cut up salary cap space, the San Fransisco 49ers cut Woodson and Kevin Greene.

In 1998, Woodson signed a three-year contract with Baltimore Ravens and left in 2002 due to a salary cap issue. In the same year, he signed in a six-year contract with the Oakland Raiders and was released in 2004 due to knee surgery.

After retiring from the sport, Rod went to broadcasting for Westwood One as an analyst on college football in 2012 and 2013 NFL. Later he started his coaching career by coaching the defense at Valley Christian Senior High in Dublin.

He also worked as an NFL analyst at the NFL Network and the Big Ten Network. Rod was a part of BBC Sports 2007 NFL coverage. Raiders selected Rod as their cornerback coach in 2011 and also joined Pittsburgh Steelers as an intern coach in 2013. He signed with the Raiders again as an assistant defensive back coach in 2015.
