She reached the peak of her career when she played the role of the protagonist's first love, Ann Rutledge, in the 1924 movie 'The Dramatic Life Of Abraham Lincoln'. While she was busy playing leads and second leads in silent films, her roles started becoming smaller and smaller when sound pictures became the norm in Hollywood.

Soon, Ruth Clifford was discovered by John Ford, and she became his instant favorite. Although the actor-director duo worked together in eight films, she rarely had prominent roles. Clifford worked in over 140 substantial films. Unfortunately, over 80 of her works were uncredited. Out of her credited movies, she was an integral part of 'Polly Put The Kettle On', 'Eternal Love', 'A Kentucky Cinderella', 'Mother O' Mine', and 'The Mysterious Mr. Tille'. She also appeared in 'The Desire Of The Moth', 'The Door Between', 'The Savage', 'Hands Down', 'The Kaiser, The Beast Of Berlin', and 'Hungry Eyes'. She was seen as Rhoda Tuttle in 'The Red, Red Heart', as Mary in 'The Guilt Of Silence', and as Gertrude Temple in 'Midnight Madness'.

Clifford starred in 'Fires Of Youth', 'The Lure Of Luxury', and 'The Cabaret Girl' as Ann Reid. Apart from her several uncredited roles, Ruth Clifford was seen in 'The Game's Up', 'The Millionaire Pirate', 'The Black Gate', 'The Amazing Woman', 'The Invisible Ray', and 'Tropical Love'.
