Associate Justice Sonia Sotomayor was the first woman of color, Latina, and Hispanic who served on the Supreme Court. Sonia was honored with honorary law degrees from almost a dozen universities and other recognizations.

Sonia Sotomayor received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Princeton University, graduating summa cum laude in 1976. In 1979, Sonia received Juris Doctor from the Yale Law School. On May 2009, President Barack Obama nominated Sonia after the retirement of David Souter as the Associate Justice of the Supreme Court. Supreme Court Associate Justice Sonia Maria Sotomayor was born on June 25, 1954, and spent her developing years in her birthplace Bronx, New York. With her father, Juan Sotomayor, mother, Celina Sotomayor, and brother Juan Jr, Sonia shifted from their small residence in the Bronx to the public housing project, Bronxdale Homes. Sonia's family suffered from financial issues during that period, and her father's drinking habits worsened the family's condition. Books and her granny gave her solace in an otherwise troubled life. Her father, Juan Sotomayor, died when Sonia was nine years old. With her father's insurance money, the family moved from the Bronxdale homes when the condition deteriorated to Co-op City, Northeast Bronx.

From her preschool to her eight grade, little Sonia attended Blessed Sacrament Parish School, Soundview, NewYork. She progressed in her studies, and her mother, Celina, also insisted. At her graduation, Sonia was the valedictorian. After clearing her entrance examinations, she joined Cardinal Spellman High School, Bronx, and graduated in 1972.

Upon a friend's recommendation, Sonia Sotomayor applied to Princeton University. She was accepted at Princeton with a scholarship. She initially struggled with the changing atmosphere with fewer female and Latina students. With hard work and excessive reading and writing, she seemingly progressed academically. In 1976, Sonia graduated summa cum laude from Princeton. She was awarded the Moses Taylor Pyne Prize, one of the highest under-graduation level awards on her graduation. After she graduated from Princeton, Sonia entered Yale Law School. There, she became an editor of the Yale Law Journal and graduated from Yale in 1979.

Sonia Sotomayor was born to Juan and Celina, both of them were born in Puerto Rico. Her father, Juan worked in a factory and her mother, Celina, was a nurse. After three years of Sonia's birth, Juan and Celina birthed a boy, Juan Jr. She dated Kevin Noonan during high school, who later became a patent lawyer and a biologist. In 1976, Sonia and Kevin Noonan married at St. Patrick's Cathedral in New York. She then changed her name to Sonia Sotomayor de Noonan.

After graduating from Yale Law School, Sonia Sotomayor started working as an assistant district attorney in New York in 1979. She served as a trial lawyer under Robert Morgenthau, District Attorney. As an Assistant District Attorney, Sotomayor worked for nearly five years dealing with cases ranging from thievery to fraudulent acts.

In 1984, Sonia left District Attorney's office to start a private practice. She joined Pavia and Harcourt, a renowned law firm in Manhattan as an associate for the second time. With dedication and hard work, she became a partner in the firm after a couple of years as an associate.

From the year 1980 to 1992, she served on the board of directors of the Puerto Rican Legal Defense and Education Fund. In 1985, she was appointed as a member of the board of the Maternity Center Association. She also worked on the State of New York Mortgage Agency board from 1987 to 1992.

David Botwinik forced Sonia to appeal for the federal judge position. Upon David's persuasion, she applied for the post. Daniel Patrick Moynihan, a senator, interviewed her and recommended Sonia to then-President George H. W. Bush. She was appointed to serve United States District Court, Southern District of New Work. In 1997, Sonia was nominated by President Bill Clinton to serve on the US Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit. She also lectured at New York University Law School and Columbia Law School during that period.

When Justice David Souter retired, President Barack Obama nominated Sonia to the Supreme Court. After presenting herself before Senate Judiciary Committee, Sonia's appointment was finalized by the United States Senate.

Besides being a Supreme Court Justice and a lecturer, Sonia Sotomayor was a writer. She published her memoir 'My Beloved World' in 2013. Her judgment on this case brought her more or less an epithet, "the judge who saved baseball". She was on the chair with six other justices who upheld a component in the Affordable Care Act of 2010 or Obamacare.
