Ruth resided above what became Camden Yards in Baltimore for a time, next to his dad's saloon. He was also known as Bambino, the Home Run King, as well as the Sultan of Swat. Babe Ruth's height was 6.17 ft (1.88 m).

What was Babe Ruth famous for?

Babe Ruth's parents sent him to St. Mary's Industrial School for Boys as he was getting too much for them to handle. He was being trained to become a shirt maker.

He was also the first baseball player to score a home run in an All-Star Game, which took place in 1933 at Chicago's Comiskey Park.

He was still so young when he began playing professionally and signed with the Major League Baseball (MLB) that he needed legal custody and was 'adopted' by monks. Brother Matthias was a huge influence on young Ruth.

On April 2, 1931, a 17-year-old female pitcher, Jackie Mitchell, struck Ruth out during an exhibition match.

In a match at Griffith Stadium, Washington DC, Babe Ruth was knocked out. He collided with a concrete block while attempting to catch a foul ball.

During his Major League career, the Sultan of Swat appeared in 2,503 games. He scored 2,174 runs and stole 123 bases throughout Major League history.

On March 7, 1914, he hit his first skilled home run in Fayetteville during the intrasquad game where he played shortstop. Ruth earned his renowned moniker when playing for the Orioles.  Nobody knows who first referred to him as Babe.

Ruth has the seventh-highest batting average among players of the Modern Era, but he only won one batting title with 378 in 1924. A new baseball official suspended Ruth and teammate Bob Meusel for the first six weeks of the 1922 season.

In 1938, Babe Ruth was hired to be the first-base coach with the Brooklyn Dodgers.

Ruth was diagnosed with throat cancer in 1947. Babe Ruth died in 1948 at 53. An open casket was kept at Yankee Stadium for two days so that fans could pay tribute to him.

There were over 100,000 people in attendance. Ruth played his final game in a baseball stadium on June 13, 1948, at Yankee Stadium. Ruth's Number three was the second Yankee number to be retired.

Babe Ruth died on August 16, 1948, as a result of throat cancer at the age of 53 years. He was survived by his wife Claire and daughters Julia (adopted daughter) and Dorothy. The death of the baseball legend marked the end of an era in the history of baseball.

Happy Chandler proclaimed April 27 as Babe Ruth Day in 1947. In 1917, he went 24-13 with a 2.01 ERA in 326 1/3 innings, leading the American League with 35 complete games.

The New York Yankees won four World Series with Ruth. Ruth led his league in Triple Crown categories over a span of three years. By doing so, he became the first player of the 20th century with this achievement.
